CURRICULUM
READING - We'll continue to work on reading with fluency this week.
WRITING - We're still working on persuasive writing. Last week, Zach wrote a VERY convincing opinion piece about why he likes fries better than burgers. Kindergarten Registration
If you have a child starting Kindergarten in the fall, please make sure to register them ASAP. Having everyone registered on time ensures the Public Schools' Branch staffs our school appropriately. One late registration can mean the difference between two K classes or three and can have a domino effect througout the school. Get those registrations in and spread the word!
School Bake Sale Fundraiser
Sherwood Elementary School is having a nut-free bake sale for a fundraiser for our future school playground. A request is going out to our Sherwood families to invite them to send in nut-free baked goods in their original packaging, certifying that they are nut-free. Unfortunately, we are unable to accept home-baked goods due to severe student allergies. This will ensure a nut-friendly environment for our staff and students who may have allergies or sensitivities to nuts. We will also have pre-packaged nut and gluten free items for sale for people who choose this option as some people may be gluten sensitive. With Sherwood being such a diverse community, we welcome and encourage parents/ guardians to send treats that represent their country of origin if possible. Items will be for sale in smaller packages and individually for students to buy. Items will be priced accordingly, with nothing being over $2.00. The date for our sale will be May 1, 2025. Parents will be able to send their child to school with their items that morning and students will be invited to pop down to the kitchen at recess to purchase their baked goods. If you have any questions, please reach out to Tracey McAskill at txmcaskill@edu.pe.ca.
Ready, Set, Learn 2025 Summer Tutoring
Sherwood Parents can submit names for Ready, Set, Learn summer tutoring. The program provides children in grade K-6, English and French, with free tutoring in reading, writing or math during the summer, at your local library. The program is presented by the PEI Literacy Alliance and runs once a week for 50 minutes during the months of July and August. The expectation is that participants will be available for the 8 sessions. Please note that this tutoring program is for those students who need it most. Parents are to submit their child’s name by sending an email to Marie-Lyne Bédard (FI Resource Teacher) mlbedard@edu.pe.ca with Summer Tutoring as the subject and include a message the child’s name and grade level. The deadline is May 1 and then a consent form will be sent home to be filled out and returned to Marie-Lyne Bédard by May 7. Depending on the number of applications received, some students may be placed on a waiting list. A tutor will contact parents late in June to share if children are enrolled in the program or on a wait list. If parents have any questions about the program, they can contact the PEI Literacy Alliance at 902-368-3620.
School Playground Fundraiser – A Night of Sounds and Support
Please support the new inclusive Sherwood School playground by attending an unforgettable evening of incredible live music from local artists and performers including Lawrence Maxwell, Brooke MacAurthur, Vintage 2.0 and many more and hosted by Patrick Ledwell. Tickets are $40 +tax/fees for general admission or purchase a special table of 8 with treats for $350 +tax/fees. Right now, the committee is trying to sell, sell, sell as many tickets so thank you for spreading the word. The more money raised at this event will mean less needing to be raised at others.
Easter Seals
The 44th annual Easter Seals Tour will be from April 23 to 30 with year’s ambassador, Remi Dean visiting Sherwood on Monday, April 28 at 9:25 a.m. Remi is a grade 3 student from Ellerslie and her motto is: ‘Always remember that you can do hard things!’ and she is happy that everyone is collecting funds for Easter Seals because it helps a lot of people who have different abilities. Students and staff are encouraged to participate in a school-wide fundraising day in support of Easter Seals. The Student Services Team will also supervise an extra recess 9:45 a.m.-10:15 a.m. to recognize everyone’s fundraising efforts on Monday, May 5 for Kindergarten to Grade 2 students and Tuesday, May 6 for Grade 3 to Grade 6 students.
A special addition this year is that the Minister of Education, Robin Croucher, has agreed to buy a ‘pizza party’ for the school that raises the most money per student! Go Sherwood!
Pancake Breakfast

Please lock the loose sheets into the duotang for your child.
It is so helpful if you check off what your child completed. Some parents even put little notes so I knew what went well. So helpful!
If your child is not finished at the 15 minute mark, just stop!
If the homework routine creates chaos in the evenings, skip it!
Please send the blue duotang to school everyday in their homework folder.

CURRICULUM
Reading - Guided reading is a huge success in 1B! Many students are choosing to bring their book home to read to someone special. If your child has a blue folder with a book in it in their homework bag, please make a huge deal out of it, have your child "show off" and read for you, then put the book back in the blue folder/ homework bag to return the next day.

If you'd like to support your child at home, please help them count forward and back to and from 50, ask them one more/one less than a number, have them skip count by 10s to 50, and ask them greater/less/equal true or false questions.
Technology - We will start our first technology unit this week. Students are asked to bring in a pair of working headphones.
HALLOWEEN
Students are allowed to wear costumes to school on Halloween; however, no masks or weapons are permitted. Also, a personal request, please do not send make up for me to apply. Please make sure their costume is something they can move around in and get in and out of on their own. We will do a variety of activities on Thursday, but I'm also going to attempt to make it a learning day as much as possible. I will bring a small treat for the class to eat, so please do not send in any candy, junk food, or other food.
REMINDERS

WEEKLY UPDATE - SEPTEMBER 24th - 27th, 2024
Hi everyone,
We had an excellent week last week in 1B as many students are settling in to the routines and expectations. Here's what's coming up this week in 1B and around the school.
SPECIALISTS
Tuesday is Day 1 of our school schedule.
Phys. Ed. - Tuesday, Thursday
Music - Wednesday, Friday
Library - n/a
Book Buddies - Thursday
CURRICULUM
Reading - Last week, we learned that readers read (or at this point, look at the pictures) in their books the whole time. We've worked up to 7 minutes of independent reading time. Baby steps :) We've also learned that readers re-read their favourite books over and over again. This coming week, we will hyper focus on tapping and blending the sounds in words to read. Then, we'll re-check the word to make sure it makes sense and that the sounds match the letters.
Writing - Last week, we worked on several sentence stems. (On the weekend..., I can..., When I grow up...). We worked on stretching sounds in words and writing what we hear. We also practiced following steps to complete a piece of writing: First words, then sketch, next colour, last check it and hand it in with your name on it. We will continue this process this week as well.
Fundations - We will continue to work through Unit 1 - lowercase letter formation, consonants, and short vowels.
Math - We finished our review of numbers 1-10 with a number scavenger hunt on Friday. This coming week, we will zoom in on teen numbers. We will continue to work on number formation, representing numbers, counting principles, and subitizing (recognizing numbers at a glance without counting).
Humanities - We've been working through our second mini-unit in health. First we worked on self-control; now we're working on respect.
ORANGE SHIRT DAY
We will be observing Orange Shirt Day during TRC week on Thursday, September 26. Everyone is encouraged to wear an orange shirt to school on this day.
TERRY FOX WALK/RUN
Sherwood School is excited to be holding our Terry Fox Run on September 27 at 12:15 p.m. as our students raise money towards cancer research and follow in the footsteps of one of our greatest Canadian Heroes. The route will be to and from Rosedale park and running walking around it. Anyone can donate online at: https://schools.terryfox.ca/76108 or we are having a Spare Change Day on September 27. Students are invited to bring in a Loonie, Toonie or any spare change to school on the day of our school run for Terry Fox.
MERCY WATSON CELEBRATION!
We've been reading the Mercy Watson series in 1B, and your kiddos are all-in! To celebrate our favourite pig, Mercy, we are having a Mercy Watson Celebration on Friday, September 27th (same day as Terry Fox). Students are invited to wear pink if they choose, and they can also bring their favourite book from home (does not have to be pig related!). We will make Mercy headbands, play various games, read tons of chapters in our latest Mercy book, AND learn to make toast (Mercy's favourite food!). It's probably going to be a great time. :)
THANKSGIVING ASSEMBLY
The Thanksgiving Assembly will be held on Friday, October 11 at 12:15 in the gym. The grade 2 classes will perform, and families of those students are welcome to attend.
FOOD DRIVE
Sherwood School will be having a Food Drive October 1-9. All food will be displayed at the Thanksgiving Assembly on October 11. Any donations of non-perishable food items will be appreciated, and these will be forwarded to The Upper Room Food Bank in Charlottetown. The Sherwood community is always very generous, and we hope this tradition continues. Let’s fill our stage with food!
REMINDERS
There is no school for students on Monday.
Students need to bring their own forks and spoons to school. *If you would like to donate a package of plastic (or wooden) forks and/or spoons to our classroom, I would be forever grateful!
Students need a water bottle everyday, please! *There are some extra water bottles in the office; however, if you would like to donate a few extras to 1B, I would be so appreciative!
