Feb. 2024

Feb. 26 - March 1

Here is a look at our week:

Fundations - Unit 7 - open syllables, combining open syllables with closed and vowel consonant e syllables,  y as a vowel, suffixes y, ly, ty.  This unit runs for three weeks and we have needed additional time for extra review given the amount of new concepts and previous storm days and holiday.

Trick words:  city, large, family, every, something, night.   *Please have your child practice these each evening as part of their homework.  There is a space in their homework log for students to print each of their trick words neatly in the appropriate box corresponding to the day of the week. Students are encouraged to practice in other fun ways throughout the week as well. Some suggestions: sing, chant or stomp them or use magnetic letters.  They could also be written on strips of paper and cut out (letter by letter) and be reassembled several times. Or write their words in fancy writing. Consistent practice will help students spell these words accurately in their written work.

Math - review  subtraction strategies -  doubles, count back, subtract 10.  We will begin part part whole, missing addend. We are also working on two digit subtraction with no regrouping.

Language Arts - Nonfiction.  After collecting and organizing our facts and looking at how authors share their facts in interesting ways, we have begun the writing portion of our polar bear projects. Students are beginning their independent part of their project.

Parent Teacher interviews will be held on Thursday, March 7 (in the evening) and Friday March 8. Parents/Guardians will be able to begin to booking appointment times on Monday, Feb. 26 at 9 am. Anyone who require interpreters for interviews will be contacted and scheduled at a separate time.

If you are scheduling interviews for two or more children at Glen Stewart or between Glen Stewart and Stratford Elementary, please leave at least a 15 minute block between each child’s interview.  That way, if one interview happens to run late, it won’t affect the next interview.  Many of our interviews are scheduled back-to-back and we really try our best to stay within the allotted 15 minutes for each family.  If a parent arrives late, we will have less time to discuss their child’s progress.

Also, if you are not able to meet during the scheduled parent teacher interview days, please reach out.  We can arrange to meet one day after school – outside of the interview schedule.

Notes

Websites tab:  I added a tab at the top of this page that has the log-in information for Raz-kids, Splashlearn and Get Epic. This info was included in some posts in November, but added the info to its own tab to make it easier to find.

Winter clothes - Please ensure your child has all  their winter gear and an extra set of mitts when they come to school.  The school seems to be very low on extra winter clothes to lend students who might have missed packing them that morning.  If your child happens to come home with mittens, etc that you don't recognize, they may be from the school's extra supply and can be returned.  Please label all gear with your child's name.  It helps when items are found and if students have similar items - to sort which items belong to which students.

Extra utensils in kitbags - Please back an "emergency" spoon or two in your child's school bag, so they will have an extra if there is not one in their lunch bag that day.  Also, on days when lunch is ordered, vendors do not provide cutlery.

Have a great week!

Feb. 20-23

A genuine thank you for all of the kindness shown last week for Staff Appreciation Week and Valentine's Day!  I am very grateful to work with wonderful families, beautiful students and in such a supportive school community. Thank you!

Feb. 12- 16

I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful sunshine today.  It almost felt like spring!

Here is a look at our week:

Fundations - Unit 7 - open syllables, combining open  syllables with closed and vowel consonant e syllables,  y as a vowel, suffixes y, ly, ty.  This unit runs for three weeks and may extend into a fourth week with the storm days last week..  Trick words:  city, large, family, every, something, night.

Math - review  subtraction strategies -  doubles, count back.  Begin subtract 10.  We are also working on two digit addition with no regrouping and representing numbers with expanded form and sharing the value of the digits in a number.

Language Arts - Nonfiction.  After collecting and organizing our facts and looking at how authors share their facts in interesting ways, we are beginning the writing portion of our polar bear projects.

Valentine's Day - We will have a small class celebration on Wednesday, Feb. 14th.  Students are welcome to wear red, pink and/or white and to give out Valentines.  Please see my email earlier in the week with information about the day and for a class list to address the cards, if you choose to give out cards. Families are welcome to bring in treats; though there is certainly no expectation to do so.

Dental forms - Please fill out and return any yellow forms from the school dental clinic.  If you do not wish your child to have the services suggested, there is a box to check that indicates that.  Please check it and sign and return the form.  Thank you!
