April 2024

April 15-18

How is it already the middle of April?!  It is certainly nice to see the sun and feel the warmer temperatures.

Here's a look at our week:

Fundations: Unit 9 - er, ir, ur  Trick words: picture, learn, earth, father, brother, mother

*Please have your child practice these each evening as part of their homework.  There is a space in their homework log for students to print each of their trick words neatly in the appropriate box corresponding to the day of the week. Students are encouraged to practice in other fun ways throughout the week as well. Some suggestions: sing, chant or stomp them or use magnetic letters.  They could also be written on strips of paper and cut out (letter by letter) and be reassembled several times. Or write their words in fancy writing. Consistent practice will help students spell these words accurately in their written work.

L. Arts - We are exploring persuasive texts and writing and choosing possible  topics for our own pieces.  They can be a favourite (ex. Green is the best color!), a choice (Swimming or soccer?) or  real world example (Should grade two students choose their own bedtime?).

Math - two digit addition and subtraction with regrouping.   Two digit operations with regrouping are among the most complex skills we learn in grade two.  I remind my class each day to be gentle with themselves and not to worry if they are not understanding it right away.  We will continue to practice together to help build confidence. :)  We will soon use 2 digit addition and subtraction in problem solving situations.

Notes:

PD Day on Friday, April 19 - no classes for students

Easter Seals Campaign - Lucie Gallant is this year’s Easter Seals Ambassador.  Lucie and her entourage will be at Glen Stewart Primary on Wednesday April 24th at 8:40 a.m. for the annual Easter Seals Tour.

On Thursday of next week, we will be giving a fudgsicle to all of our students at lunch (or snack, depending on the homeroom teacher’s preference).  We ask that you consider sending in a monetary donation before Thursday so that we can pool together funds to donate to the Easter Seals Campaign.  The class that raises the most money, will have a pizza party.  The class that raises the second most amount of money will get an extra recess outside, supervised by Ms. Hufnagel and Ms. Dunn.  If you do not want your child to receive a fudgesicle, or if your child has dietary restrictions, please inform your child’s homeroom teacher.

Money raised through Easter Seals Campaign goes to many Island organizations to help assist people of all ages living with disabilities by purchasing items and providing services.

Websites tab:  I added a tab at the top of this page that has the log-in information for Raz-kids, Splashlearn and Get Epic. This info was shared earlier in the year, but it has been added the info to its own tab to make it easier to find.

Spring clothes -  Please label all gear with your child's name.  It helps when items are found and if students have similar items - to sort which items belong to which students.  Splash pants and rubber boots might be a good option some days as it gets warmer.  Our playgrounds can be quite wet and muddy in the spring.

Extra utensils in kitbags - Please back an "emergency" spoon or two in your child's school bag, so they will have an extra if there is not one in their lunch bag that day.  Also, on days when lunch is ordered, vendors do not provide cutlery.

Have a great week!

April 8-12

It's finally Eclipse Day!  We have been learning about the eclipse for the last number of days and the students are excited it is happening today.  Some are looking forward to watching it happen and others are waiting to see how dark it gets during the event.

*With the shorter day, we did not introduce these today. We will pick these up on Tuesday.

I hope everyone enjoyed the break with their families.

Winter/Spring clothes - Please ensure your child has all  their winter gear and an extra set of mitts when they come to school.  The school seems to be very low on extra winter clothes to lend students who might have missed packing them that morning.  If your child happens to come home with mittens, etc that you don't recognize, they may be from the school's extra supply and can be returned.  Please label all gear with your child's name.  It helps when items are found and if students have similar items - to sort which items belong to which students.   Splash pants and rubber boots might be a good option some days as it gets warmer.  Our playgrounds can be quite wet and muddy in the spring.
