Social Emotional Learning

CASEL says " We define social and emotional learning (SEL) as an integral part of education and human development. SEL is the process through which all young people and adults acquire and apply the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to develop healthy identities, manage emotions and achieve personal and collective goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain supportive relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. Social Emotional Learning at school can help students become themselves. Students are not just students, they are people with emotions and who are in relationship with those around them. Without social emotional learning we are not fully preparing our students.

Social Emotional Learning Includes:

Self Awareness

Self Management

Responsible Decision Making

Relationship Skills

Social Awareness

SEL in the Art Studio classroom

The art studio classroom is a wonderful place to put SEL learning into action.

When we look at art made by others, we practice social awareness.

When we plan and design our artwork and care for our shared tools and materials we practice responsible decision making.

When we share artwork with a friend we practice relationship skills.

When we focus on our work we practice self management.

And when we turn a disappointment into an opportunity we develop our growth mindset.
