All About Morrow

What we know about Morrow Elementary and the City of Morrow, how that can effect our students and community resources that can assist.

Morrow Elementary Students(2021)

The largest population groups represented at Morrow Elementary are Black or African, Hispanic or Latino, and Asian. Compared to Clayton County as a whole, we have more Hispanic or Latino and Asian students, and fewer Black or African students.

Our most common student service is assisting English Language Learners. Our Gifted and Exceptional Students departments are nearly equal in size. We have a few students with other health concerns and a few who are experiencing homelessness.

Morrow has a similar percentage of Black or African students compared to the overall population of the City of Morrow. We have a larger percentage of Hispanic or Latino students and a lower percentage of Asian students when compared to the City of Morrow as a whole.

The city of Morrow has a higher percentage of home ownership than Clayton county but lower than the state as a whole. It also has a lower poverty rate than both the state and the county. While the median income is just slightly higher than Clayton county, it is nearly $10,000 lower than the state. The most dramatic differences though are in relation to health access and where residents were born. Morrow has a much higher percentage of residents who were born outside the US and a much higher percentage of residents who do not have health insurance. Clayton county as a whole also has a higher uninsured rate and the ratios of patients to doctors and dentists is more than twice as high as the state.

Impact on Students and Learning

The data points that stand out to me the most are those related to our English Language Learners and the health and food access issues. Each of these directly effect the students in our school.

While the benefits of being multilingual are many, the journey to learn English as a second or third language is not always easy, and support along the way can be crucial. One of the strategies I am working on currently is having audio translation available for the prepared parts of my lessons so that students can access the material in their most comfortable or familiar language while also being immersed in English.

Access to food and medical care is crucial, especially this year, for students to be able to be at school and focus on learning. The high rates of being uninsured and the very high rates of patients to health care providers mean than visit can will be expensive and hard to come by. I wonder too, how many providers have personnel able to speak the variety of languages spoken in Morrow (though I did not find data on that). Clayton county public schools nutrition department has gone above and beyond the normal over the last year and a half to help insure students have access to meals, but it is clear that those efforts are not yet reaching everyone.
