Jonesboro High School Law & Justice Literacy Plan
Purpose
The Jonesboro High School Law and Justice Program is committed to developing students’ reading, writing, speaking, and critical-thinking skills to prepare them for academic success and professional excellence in legal and public safety careers.
Goals
Strengthen reading comprehension through case studies, statutes, and informational texts.
Improve writing proficiency in legal briefs, reports, and reflections.
Build academic and career-specific vocabulary.
Develop oral communication through debates, mock trials, and presentations.
Support literacy equity for diverse learners, including ELL and IEP students.
Instructional Strategies
Reading: Close reading, annotation, and case law analysis.
Writing: Structured essays, CER writing, and real-world legal documents.
Vocabulary: Frayer Model and word walls for legal terms.
Speaking & Listening: Socratic seminars, mock trials, and press briefings.
Technology Integration: Use of NewsELA, Google Workspace, and interactive writing tools.
Assessment
Formative: Journals, exit tickets, and reading logs.
Summative: Essays, oral arguments, and written reports.
Progress Monitoring: Pre/post literacy diagnostics and rubric-based evaluations.
Collaboration & Support
Partner with ELA teachers and media specialists for cross-curricular literacy alignment.
Offer targeted supports through tutoring, differentiated instruction, and literacy software.
