Charles R. Drew Literacy Plan

The Law and Justice pathway at Charles R. Drew High School places a strong emphasis on literacy as part of daily instruction. Students regularly read law and justice-related texts, including the course textbook, case scenarios, statutes, and informational articles. These materials help students build content knowledge while also strengthening reading comprehension and academic vocabulary.

Students are taught to closely read legal texts, identify key terms, summarize important details, and explain outcomes using evidence from the text. Written assignments require students to respond to prompts, complete case analyses, and reflect on legal issues using complete sentences and appropriate terminology. This consistent practice supports growth in both reading and writing skills within the context of the Law and Justice curriculum.

 The program also uses the school media center as a resource for student learning. Students visit the media center to check out law and justice-related books and access research materials for projects, presentations, and case-based assignments. During these activities, students learn how to locate reliable sources, take organized notes, and use information appropriately in their work.

 In addition, students participate in discussions, debates, and group activities that require them to explain their thinking, ask questions, and support their ideas using information from assigned readings. These activities strengthen speaking and listening skills while helping students become more confident using legal vocabulary.
