LNS Music Courses

• Take note:

  • Jazz Band students are expected to also be enrolled in Wind Symphony

  • Marching Band students are required to be enrolled in Wind Symphony, Concert Band, or Percussion Class

    • Exceptions:  Students participating in TCA or possibly Color Guard Students

• Also, music students intending to be a music major in college or have a career in music should enroll in as many music classes as possible, specifically choir and/or any/all of our non-traditional music classes (guitar, music tech, world drumming). 

Equipment 

Everyday items listed below are essential and are needed daily. Etude books listed are simply suggestions of materials you could purchase to strengthen your musicianship outside of class. 

Flute  

Everyday Items: Cleaning rod and swab   

Etude Books: Anderson 24 Studies, Cavally Melodious & Progressive Studies, Voxman Selected Studies 

Clarinet           

Everyday Items: Cork grease, reed case, reeds (Vandoren), & swab                                    

Reeds: Mitchell Lurie, Rico, Vandoren. Use strengths 3 - 4. Avoid plastic-cover reeds and flavored reed.                                                                                                                                            

Etude Books: Hite Melodious & Progressive Studies, Rose 40 Studies, Rose 32 Etudes, Stievenard Practical Study of Scales 

Saxophone                    

Everyday Items: Cork grease, neck strap, reed case, reeds (Vandoren), & swab                             

Reeds: Hemke, Rico, Vandoren. Use strengths 3-4. Avoid plastic-cover reeds and flavored reed.                                                                        Etude Books: DeVille Universal Method for Saxophone, Ferling 48 Studies for Saxophone, Voxman Selected Studies 

Trumpet             

Everyday Items: Valve oil, slide grease, cleaning rag                                                              

Mutes: Straight mute (optional mutes: harmon, cup, plunger).        

Etude books: Schlossberg Daily Drills..., H.L. Clarke Technical Studies..., Arban method 

Horn

Everyday Items: rotary valve oil, slide grease, cleaning rag,                                                        

Mutes: mute (optional: stopped mute)                                                                                             

Etude books: Getchell 1st/2nd book of Practical Studies for Horn, Clarke and/or Schlossberg (see trumpet books above). 

Trombone

Everyday Items: slide oil, cleaning rag                                                                                           

Mutes: straight mute (optional mute: cup, plunger)                                                    

Etude Books (+euphonium): Getchell 1st/2nd book of Practical Studies for Trombone, Rouchet Melodious Etudes for Trombone Book 1 

Tuba/Euphonium

Everyday Items: valve oil, slide grease, cleaning rag 

Etude Books (tuba only): Getchell 1st/2nd book of Practical Studies for Tuba, Kopprasch 60 selected studies 

Percussion 

Sticks: Concert Snare sticks (ie. Vic Firth, 5B, SD-1) 

Etude Books: Stone Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Whaley Musical Studies for the Mallet Player, Pratt 14 Modern Contest Solos for the Snare Drum, Goldenberg 12 Progressive Drum Solos
