Touch Typing & Spreadsheet budgets with Charts

Fourth Grade Technology Lessons focus on typing skills development and spreadsheet budgets with charts (Q1), coding and logic games (Q2), graphics / photo editing (Q3), and presentations (Q4).

In Q1, students continue to develop two hand homerow typing proficiency. Students also create a variety of spreadsheet budgets with charts.

Students will learn spreadsheet vocabulary such as rows, columns, cells, data, values, and formulas. Spreadsheets may be created using a variety of spreadsheet applications from Microsoft, Google, Apple and other similar programs.

Session 1: Introductions, Lab Rules, Typing and Enrichment

Introductions:

• Introduction to the computer lab teacher, discuss what we will do in the lab.
• Spend time getting to know the students.

Review Computer Lab Rules:

Review of Typing Stage 1:

• Demonstrate how to use Dance Mat Typing Stage 1, Level 1 (ASDF, JKL, and G, H).
• Review the home row and proper finger technique.
• Download proper keyboard finger placement poster.

Typing Practice:

• Practice for 25-30 minutes or until done.

Additional Typing Practice:

• 3 minutes of Typing Rocket JR.
  • Type with both hands, try to get a final score of 60 points or more.
• Finish level 2 of Keyboard Climber 2. Type with both hands.

Enrichment:

• Students work on enrichment activities after typing.

Session 2: Word Processing, "My Vacation" and Enrichment

My Vacation:

• Make the "My Vacation" templates available to the students.
  • Demonstrate how to write in the editable text boxes.
• Students use a graphic organizer to write about their vacation.
  • Write 100+ words about your vacation. Save / print their finished work.

5. Demonstrate how to add clipart or images if possible.
6. Demonstrate how to Save / Print as necessary.
7. Watch the short spreadsheet video tutorials.

Expense Spreadsheet Assignment:

• Create an expense spreadsheet and chart with school supplies.
  • You have $60.00 to spend on school supplies.
  • Use the School Supplies Price List to purchase as many items as you can without going over budget.
  • Use the a formula (SUM) to calculate your total expenses.
  • Enter your choices into a spreadsheet and create a chart with the data.

Enrichment:

• Students work on enrichment activities when finished.

  • Use the Clothes Shopping Price List to purchase as many items as you can without going over budget.
  • Create a spreadsheet using the list of clothes and their prices.
    • Use the a formula (SUM) to calculate your total expenses.
  • Create a chart illustrating your clothing expenses.

  • You have one gift card for $15.00 for the school cafeteria called "Munch Box."
  • Choose items from the Munch Box Menu.
    • Select enough items to get food and drinks for themselves and one very hungry and thirsty friend for lunch.
  • Purchase as many items as you can without going over budget.
  • Create an expense chart showing the costs of your purchases.

    • Use a formula (SUM) to calculate the total cost.
    • Create a chart illustrating your camping supply expenses.
