Touch Typing, internet safety & Word Processing

Third Grade Technology Lessons focus on typing skills development and expense spreadsheets with charts (Q1), coding and logic games (Q2), research (Q3), and presentations (Q4).

In Q3, students continue to develop two hand homerow typing proficiency. Students learn the "Cyber Five" - five helpful rules to keep students safer on the internet. Students will review basic word processing skills by writing a poem with a poem generator and practice online research with several short research activities.

Students will learn to search online for information, use search keywords, evaluate search results, read information, determine relevancy and consider accuracy and quality of information.

Session 1: Internet Safety, Typing and Enrichment

Cyber Five Rules:

Helpful rules to be safer on the internet

1. Never give out personal info
2. Don't download alone, avoid viruses
3. Don't respond to a bully
4. Copy and Paste, save it and Print, keep the evidence
5. If you feel uncomfortable with what you see, tell an adult

• Demonstrate how to use the browser back button and browser tabs.
• Demonstrate how to search using keywords in a search engine.
  • Example: "Facts about the sun for kids"

Internet Research Assignment:

• Research Interesting Facts about the Sun
  • Practice searching online to become skilled at finding information efficiently and quickly using a search engine.
    • Search using "keywords" to find appropriate sites for their information.
• Download and print research sheets.
  • Students use pencils to write their answers in complete sentences on the sheet.

Enrichment:

• Students work on enrichment activities after typing.
