Q: These questions SCOIR asks seem rather personal. Why do they ask about my income bracket, my schooling, etc.?I wanted to assure you that despite the personal nature of the questions, neither I nor colleges can actually see much of this information that you enter. Instead, the questions about income, education, etc. are meant to help assess and estimate potential need-based financial aid amounts (i.e. a net price for college, rather than a "sticker" published price.)
SCOIR is a trusted partner and very, very careful with this information as it relates to privacy and security. I have found SCOIR's help center blog to be incredibly informative in understanding the purpose of those questions and what SCOIR can do for you!

As the college counselor at The City School, I am pleased to introduce you to our college guidance management system, called SCOIR, to help you and your student navigate the college selection and application process! The City School has used this system for at least 7 years (with over 110 students, applying to 200+ colleges, and processing materials for over 600 individual applications!) so it is well-trusted and utilized.
We will use this tool more extensively in grades 11 and 12, as it will be the primary means of organizing, managing, tracking, and sending important documents throughout the college application process for your child. While it is certainly early in the process for our 9th or 10th grade students, I wanted you and your child to gain access to the many helpful tools on SCOIR that they can start to use NOW as they explore! Here is a short list of what they can access and utilize by joining SCOIR!
We will use this tool more extensively in grades 11 and 12, as it will be the primary means of organizing, managing, tracking, and sending important documents throughout the college application process for your child. Here is a short list of what they can access and utilize by joining SCOIR!
- College Visits -- This is another place where students can see the upcoming college visits in the fall, as well as preregister to attend!
- Reminder Messages -- SCOIR sends timely reminders and notifications of college-related to-do lists, important upcoming events, and helpful related articles -- appropriate to your child's grade and stage of planning!
- College Search -- SCOIR has a built-in college search tool for students and parents to use as they mix and match particular qualities and characteristics of their dream colleges. This is just one tool of many that can be helpful in exploring what colleges have to offer AND what they're looking for in applicants.
- College List/Following: Students can follow colleges of interest to see and receive more information -- including links to virtual visits/tours, application requirements, acceptance likelihood, and a lot more!
- Activities Resume: Students can start keeping track of their activities and involvement in and out of school using the built-in application!
- Link to Counselor -- As you and your child engage with SCOIR, my side of the portal allows me to see your child's college preferences, career aptitude results, and other key information to help me make informed decisions about inviting colleges of interest or connecting students with personalized resources or opportunities, tailored to their interests! There is a messaging app built right into SCOIR that students can utilize as well to send messages directly to me (Mrs. CR).
- Link to Colleges -- As students "follow" colleges, those colleges can send timely information to interested students through SCOIR's safe messaging. Colleges can also publish interesting posts, social-media style, on their page's Wall for students to view and learn from.
