Field Trip: Saksfjed Wilderness
Field Trip: Saksfjed Wilderness
Saturday 1 May 2027 · Optional · £30
Round off your conference with a day at Saksfjed Wilderness, one of Denmark’s largest rewilding projects, hosted by the Hempel Foundation.
About Saksfjed Wilderness
Saksfjed Wilderness covers 800 hectares on southern Lolland. Until recently, the land was farmed and managed for forestry. Today it is being returned to nature, with natural processes and large herbivores shaping a landscape of open woodland, flower-rich grassland, wet meadows and scrub.
Tauros cattle, bred to fill the ecological role of the extinct aurochs, graze the land year-round alongside Exmoor horses. Together they create a living mosaic of habitats, and the site is fast becoming one of Denmark’s most exciting places for biodiversity.
Your day
Experts from the Hempel Foundation will guide you through the landscape, sharing the vision behind the project, how it is managed and what has changed since rewilding began. It is a rare chance to see large-scale rewilding up close and talk to the people making it happen.
