Proposed Tax Rate

The current Columbus ISD tax rate is composed of the "Interest and Sinking" tax rate (I&S) and the "Maintenance and Operation" tax rate (M&O).  The I&S is used to pay debt (bond payments) and the M&O is used to run the day-to-day operations (salaries, utilities, supplies, etc.) of the school district. Bond elections impact the I&S side of the tax rate.

Citizens 65+ School Tax Impact

Property taxes for citizens 65 years or older who have filed the “Over 65 Homestead Exemption” will not increase above the tax ceiling because of the bond proposal. Under the “Over 65 Homestead Exemption” taxes are frozen at the dollar amount of the year the individual turned 65 and regardless of future tax rate increases and assuming no improvements are made to the homestead property, the tax levy for the 65-year-old will not increase beyond the ceiling dollar amount. If decreases in property value, tax rate declines, or change in exemptions cause the tax levy to fall below the ceiling amount, the over 65 taxpayers will pay the lower tax bill.

Individuals 65 years of age or older automatically qualify for the "Over 65 Homestead Exemption" based on their date of birth on the initial homestead application. If you are unaware if your date of birth is filed on your homestead application, please call the Colorado County CAD at (979) 732-8222 and their office can assist you with confirming if your taxes can be frozen.
