The Mathematics department is committed to supporting students to develop logical, critical and creative thinking skills through providing a collaborative, stimulating and supportive learning environment where skills, concepts and ideas are explored and an appreciation of the elegance and power of Mathematics is cultivated.
Effective learners of Mathematics are open minded, curious and enquiring; they posses the application and resilience to engage with challenging concepts and the confidence to take risks. When exploring a concept they patiently and deliberately adopt logical, critical and creative approaches and to accelerate progress they are resourceful, appropriately enlisting a variety of tools persistent in their desire to understand. Effective learners are careful when selecting whether to work collaboratively or individually, are aware of the inherent benefits and responsibilities of both and are able to communicate with clarity and precision in verbal and written form. Quality learning demands that the learner takes responsibility for their own learning and is aware that it is a process worthy of reflection and conscious consideration.
Mathematics plays a central role in modern culture; it is a language that supports science, technology and nature, whilst its essence lies in its abstraction, beauty and intellectual challenge. The power of mathematical reasoning lies in its use of precise and concise forms of language, symbolism and representation to reveal and explore relationships. Mathematics transcends cultural boundaries; its importance is universally acknowledged and its written communication internationally recognised.
The study of Mathematics is essential for any global citizen. The hallmarks of the subject echo throughout academia, including the arts. Many professions demand a mastery of mathematical tools and interpretation, as well as a critical understanding of statistics which can facilitate healthy scepticism. Underpinning all of these values is the fact that a solid grasp of quantitative skills – the ability to manipulate and calculate numbers, ratios and proportions – is essential to everyday life.
At Cebu International School, we offer three different Mathematics courses: Application & Interpretations SL, Analysis & Approaches SL, and Analysis & Approaches HL.
