Curatorial Rationale
The theme for my exhibition is “emotions”. The fundamental purpose of my work is to properly face and express the emotions I am currently feeling. Emotions have a very mysterious aspect. It is invisible, but so intense that it allows people to connect themselves and others, and to become a part of reality. At the same time, it makes us laugh, be in awe, and feel heartbreakingly sad. In simple words, emotions are what make people have more humanity. Although all emotions are necessary and valuable, we often make the mistake of dividing our emotions into negative and positive ones. To use emotions wisely to help us, nothing is more important than understanding them. It is my hope that the audiences who explore each artwork depicting the artist's emotions will also be able to look back on their emotions and inner sides, and express them without any embellishment.
My artworks use the same medium, acrylic paint, but have different styles with each other. Although it has the theme of “emotions”, I seek artworks that express my emotions in my own way as an artist rather than the emotions anyone can see through facial expressions, so that the audience can interpret them from the fundamental story that my work depicts. Therefore, I commonly absent the eye in all works. This is because when we try to convey a certain message, I think words occupy very little weight while non-verbal attitudes such as eyes play the most important role. At first, since I was not sure about my techniques and my theme, I explored different art styles using a variety of mediums, such as colored pencils, watercolor painting, and charcoal, before working on my main artwork. Based on my practices, I felt the most passionate about acrylic work which is very flexible. In order to study the technology using acrylic, I looked for different works by various artists. However, as I was still a beginner, I could not learn anything through works that used high-level techniques. I eventually found the works of Yue Minjun, who is best known for oil paintings depicting himself in various settings, and was inspired by his manga style artwork. I believed that manga-style work would blend in well with acrylic painting.
‘Relationships and Masks’ depicts myself wearing a mask, inspired by Persona's mask series. The white mask, which will not be given any meaning, simply contains the basic shapes of the eyes and mouth. The shape of the eye, not containing any emotion or meaning, also coincides with the absence of the eye, a common symbol of my artwork. As the theme is "emotion", the background of the work is kept white to minimize the boundary with reality. When drawing the woman in the work, I used an actual photo of myself to draw the same hair, clothes, and shadows in order to portray them as realistically as possible with the real me. ‘Obstacle', 'Obsession and Courage', and 'Nostalgia' also used the photos of my own hands and photos from the past as the resources to make them closer to my reality. A woman's black hair forms a negative space, a graphic weight, which gives a meaning of a bad situation that can occur by wearing a mask such as forgetting the real me. The white background and black graphic weight are included in all works. The black graphic weight also has a contrasting effect with the white background, allowing it to catch the audience’s attention and focus on the object. However, in the case of ‘Anxiety’, it is different. According to the meaning contained in the work, it is never the student's fault that they feel anxious because they cannot find the purpose of their study. Therefore, the negative space cannot be included in the student himself.
My works are arranged with a simple ambiance. In particular, the walls were unified with a monotonous color to focus the audience’s attention solely on the work. Each work contains different colors, stories, and emotions. Therefore, by creating a monotonous theme, each audience can look inside themselves. My ultimate goal is to give audiences time to evoke a variety of emotional responses and focus solely on their inner self.
Relationships and Masks
Acrylic, 16.5 x 23.4 inches
Life is like a theater stage, so whenever meeting acquaintances or strangers, people usually wear various masks. My gaze, smile, silence, and gestures follow appropriate practices proper to the occasion and the situation. A great actor knows how to put on the mask that best suits the situation. We also mention the importance of such an appropriate mask as an indicator of adult qualifications or maturity. But we should not be afraid to put down our masks and show our true personalities at the most meaningful moment. For a true human relationship, it is necessary to put down the appearance and bring back the true personality, but that does not mean you need to deliberately reject the appearance or mask.
Obstacle
Acrylic and Charcoal, 16.5 x 16.5 inches
I am not the obstacle to my life. It wasn't myself who disturbed my plan or my will. 'I' was just trying hard to achieve something. Whenever I wanted to achieve something, I should have looked at what was happening inside me. I should have released my mind and asked why I had such ‘emotions’ and ‘greed’. They are something to be observed from a distance, not something to be defined together with ‘I’. Those are the things I have to overcome. Through this work, my purpose is to deliver a message to the audience that the moment you define yourself as an obstacle, you will not be able to overcome anything in this world.
Nostalgia
Acrylic, 23.4 x 16.5 inches
People sometimes miss the past. However, others also say not to waste time obsessed with the past, but to think and act future-oriented. What is homesickness to humans? The worse things get, the more we are reminded of the past and nostalgic for it. This does not mean that we are not living well in the present. This work shows that nostalgia could bring some positive energy if we are not immersed in the past, and gives a message that it is a feeling that gives us joy, prevents depression, and comforts us rather than sadness.
Depression
Acrylic, 16.5 x 23.4 inches
Have you ever suddenly hated every aspect of yourself?
Have you ever fallen into endless depression regardless of the comfort of others?
Have you ever been upset that you can't control your emotions?
Looking at the world with the image of my heart, good and bad things arise. Just as mud is scattered when pressed by hands to make it sink quickly in the mud, trying to control negative emotions can only distract you.
Obsession and Courage
Acrylic, 16.5 x 23.4 inches
Have you been living your life 'hard' inertially and fitting into others’ standards without realizing what you really want?
It's not just about enduring and trying recklessly in everything. Now we need more courage than effort. Reckless but courageous to take on challenges and to give up at the right time. We all have the right to live our own life in a way we pursue. There is no manual in our lives.
To the youth
Acrylic, 16.5 x 23.4 inches
We soon finish our high school life where we only had to find the answer to a given question, and we are preparing to go out into society. And young people who are just taking their first steps have a lot of trouble. Although we do not really know ourselves yet, society keeps asking who we are. And we are constantly trying to prove ourselves and to show our value. Through this work, I want to tell them that everyone is bound to experience a lot of trial and error and needs failure for success.
Anxiety
Acrylic and colored pencils, 16.5 x 23.4 inches
Why do you study? A life in which you live hard but cannot find a goal, and an uncertain future raises anxiety. A student who could not find the purpose of studying in school will grow up to become an adult who works without a purpose. Anxiety is constantly reproduced. There are a lot of writings that comfort students, but there seem to be not many people who can listen to them. Listening to them without a word until they get answers may be a great help to students.
