Once I saw the same artwork with my friends and afterwards when I discussed it with them, I realized that everyone had different thoughts and emotions about the artwork. From this, I noticed that all the viewers have different emotions depending on their interpretation even though looking at the same artwork. This idea led me to think that all of the viewers of my artwork would have also felt different emotions as how I felt differently when looking at different artwork. Based on this idea, I wanted to create artworks that showcase different types of emotions. The overall theme of my artworks alludes to the emotions. This includes human feelings, expression, knowledge through emotion, emotional situation, cultural emotions, emotions from shapes and lines, abstraction, etc. Through my artworks, I mainly focus on relating the concept of emotions to experiences in human life.
My first piece, “Complex”, clearly shows the combination of sadness and happiness. One main reason for demonstrating these two emotions is because they are the most common emotions people easily experience. The woman in the artwork is crying at the same time smiling. However, the artwork doesn’t clearly define whether she is happy or sad. The purpose of this is to help the viewer interpret the artwork in their own ways with the different emotions they have. The artwork is a drawing using colored pencil. The use of colors is very important since it supports that the two emotions are in contrast, blue representing sadness and yellow representing happiness. These two colors highly connect to the confusion she has between the emotions and the confusions the viewer has when identifying the women’s emotion.
My second piece, “The views”, demonstrates the emotion human, especially the women faces due to discrimination. The artwork focuses on the depressing and sad emotion a women can exprience from the discrimination from the society because of their gender being. The concept further emphasizes that the women are losing their own personality and freedom because of how others watch them and judge them based on their looks. The silhouette of the women makes it clear that the discrimination is especially focused only on women and the black and white colors highlights the depression women needs to handle behind the discrimination. Additionally, the eyes surrounding the woman are the views of others that make her behave unnaturally but in a way others want her to be. The artwork is a combination of drawing skills and photography skills that makes artwork unique and therefore benefit in delivering the message of suffering we face in the society.
