In this episode, Christine and Keegan, two high school students from New Trier, share their journeys with dyslexia. They share their struggles and their successes and how they've learned to advocate for themselves. Christine and Keegan have created an organization called, Discover Dyslexia, where they intend to show other kids like themselves that through hard work and perseverance any child with dyslexia can succeed. Christine and Keegan and all of the children they represent are the reason we all need to keep learning to become better teachers of literacy.

In this episode, Dr. Rachel Knecht joins us to share the impact syntactic instruction can have on comprehension. She will describe some practical strategies that can be used in the classroom as well as share an intervention she used with students to increase their knowledge around syntax and, in turn, their comprehension of text.

S3E5- Real Stories of Advocacy and Dyslexia with Jenine Hanson
In this episode, we are acknowledging the advocacy efforts and struggles of those that have raised their voices to help teach all of us about dyslexia. Jenine Hanson is a Naperville, IL native and has helped her own daughter navigate school as she was diagnosed with dyslexia in her early years. Jenine is also a great example of rolling up her sleeves and doing the work to help support all children through her work in schools and through continuing to advocate in the past with the Dyslexia Action Group of Naperville. Currently, Jenine has closed the group, but continues to advocate and use her voice to bring awareness to parents and community members about evidenced-based practices that belong in schools.
S3E6- Writing with Dr. Leslie Laud
In this episode, Dr. Leslie Laud explains the importance of writing instruction. She shares what ThinkSRSD is and how it can be implemented in a school setting. Dr. Laud also shares how positive self-talk enhances students’ abilities with the process of writing. She shows how the ThinkSRSD process supports students through cycles of writing, and she shares some new studies that demonstrate how writing enhances reading comprehension.
S3E7- Teachers Trying it Out!
In this episode, we hear from 2 of our very own Cicero teachers, Eilene Grandau and Perri Brinkmeier from Columbus West. They will be sharing how they began implementing the sentence level strategies that the literacy department has given PD on, how that has started to change the language and writing of their students, and some easy ways to get started with this work in your classroom.
