So What's a 'Delegate'?

Delegates are the 'Mayor' or 'Ambassador' of an approximately 15 x 15 block area comprising their neighborhood elected for a 1-year term.

At-Large Delegates are selected by the Nominating Committee and elected by CHUN members at the Annual Meeting. There are 18 At-Large positions. Versus. . .
Neighborhood Delegates who convene and are elected during Neighborhood Assemblies which take place each November.

All delegates are responsible for getting involved with committees such as Zoning & Transportation, Historic Preservation, fundraising, etc.

As you become more involved and familiar you'll gain a better understanding of the impact CHUN has on community building through tree planting, preservation of neighborhood character and historic structures, social gatherings, and planned events designed to improve the safety and quality of life in our neighborhoods.

When someone asks, "What does CHUN do?", point out a few of the key 'purposes' of the organization listed below and in the by-laws.

Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods' purpose is to:

Promote a sense of neighborliness
Improve the physical appearance of the neighborhood
Provide a powerful, unified voice
Encourage representation and cooperation among diverse groups
Work on specific neighborhood problems
Promote a more positive image of the neighborhood
Develop Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods identity and visibility, and
Take action designed to improve the quality of life on Capitol Hill.

How do we serve our purpose?

Through established social community events and fundraisers held throughout the year.
Through committee work such as our 'Tree Committee', 'Zoning and Transportation', 'Parents Group', 'Fundraising', 'Membership', and 'Historic Preservation'.
And by organizing neighborhood events and programs that specifically address one or more of the 'purpose' statements from above.

Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods has planted hundreds of trees throughout Capitol Hill.
Many of the Historic Neighborhoods throughout Capitol Hill have Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods to thank for their historic distinction.
Many architectural gems destined for the wrecking ball are thriving today because of action taken by committees, individuals, and members of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods.
- When you attend a Historic Preservation meeting you will quickly learn how vital this committee is to the preservation of many of the neighborhood's most iconic structures.

Ex-Officio

Officers must be regular members of CHUN and are elected annually by the Board. The Executive Committee sets the agenda for each Board of Delegates meeting and acts on behalf of the Board between Board meetings.

Communications

The organization is equipped to target emails to specific neighborhoods. When planning an event in your community work with staff/volunteers to send notices.
