The Drama course in Year 9 extends and develops the skills introduced in Year 7 and Year 8, and acts as an important preparation for IGCSE Drama.
You will continue to follow an active and practical approach to Drama in order to develop further your performance skills, confidence and your imagination. You will build personal skills through group work and individual presentation. We also begin to introduce background theatre knowledge necessary for the IGCSE course.
Enthusiasm and a willingness to participate are vital to your success at this level. We usually arrange at least one visit to the theatre during the year.
The Year 9 course is primarily focused on the following areas:
Devised Drama
Creating and structuring a devised performance
Knowledge & application of performance techniques and styles
Mime/movement/use of voice & space/gesture/group dynamics
Scripted Performance
Work on script extracts to performance level
Development of characterisation skills
Interpreting the playwright's intentions in performance
Written/Theory Work
Study of a play extract
Theatre/stage layouts
Describing ideas for performance & design (costume & set)
Interpreting the playwright's intentions to convey meaning to an audience as an actor, director or designer
Drama is useful for anyone who may require good communication skills in the future. It requires you to work with other people and helps you gain skills in co-operation and negotiation and will be useful in any career which requires teamwork. It helps to develop confidence, the ability to communicate ideas and opinions clearly, and the courage to make decisions. It also fosters creativity which is a prized asset for many future careers.
Whilst some people who study Drama do go on to pursue a career in performance, the vast majority of students do not. Drama is a useful and recognised course for many future careers including law, teaching, business management, media production, and journalism – in fact anything where you need to talk to others!
If you enjoy the Year 9 course, Drama is available as an IGCSE option and Drama & Theatre is an A level option in the Sixth form.
If you have any further questions, please see your Drama teacher.
It is not a requirement of the course that you get involved with a school co-curricular production. However, there is no doubt that being in a school production is beneficial. The additional performance experience you acquire will help you further develop your acting skills and knowledge.
IWe aim to take you to at least one production in Y9 in order to widen your knowledge and experience of theatre. The trips are generally to theatres in the Manchester area such as The Lowry, the Royal Exchange or Home. We also may visit other areas of the North West such as Liverpool, Bolton, Stoke or Leeds. You are always given plenty of notice of the trip and there is an expectation that everyone attends, apart from in exceptional circumstances.
