Dear Year 8,

We consider Year 9 to be the foundation year for GCSE/IGCSE studies. With this in mind, there is a core curriculum for all students: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, Religious Studies, their Modern Language, the Waconian Programme, Physical Education and Games. 

Students entering Year 9 are required to choose an additional three subjects. The subjects on offer are set out in the table below. 

All courses in the option groups can lead to GCSE/IGCSE examinations in three years’ time; it is strongly recommended that students take Year 9 courses in any subjects they intend to take for GCSE/IGCSE. For information, when it comes to making GCSE/IGCSE choices at the end of Year 9, students choose 2 or 3 subjects addition to English Language, English Literature, their Modern Language, Mathematics and either Dual Award or 3 separate Sciences.

Please note:

• We take advice from the appropriate subject teachers on the advisability of student preference. If we feel any choices are unwise, Mrs Shallcross or Mr Hussain will contact parents to discuss.

• If we are unable to accommodate any initial choices, we will consult with students and parents about alternatives.

• Twilight Subject: Classical Greek lessons take place off-timetable, either at lunchtime or after school, by arrangement. More information will be shared with students later in the year by the Classics Department.
