Course Overview
In Year 9 you will study Italian as a dual linguist, alongside the language you have learned since Year 7. This course has to be accelerated, relying on transferable skills and knowledge from previous and parallel language learning. Therefore, it is an option that will appeal to students who are adept and confident with language learning, and it will not be suitable for students who have found language learning to be particularly challenging to this point.
After Year 9 you will be more confident when using Italian, both here and abroad. Throughout this year you will become increasingly aware of how important this wonderful language is for business, leisure, culture and politics.
We will also run a trip to Italy for students to use their language for real purposes and to experience the wonderful Italian cultures.
You will be mainly taught in Italian and, following successful completion of Year 9, you will feel well-equipped to carry on to GCSE level. To help you become a confident Italian speaker, your teacher will use a wide range of motivating and interactive activities to enable you to develop your Listening, Reading, Speaking and Writing skills.
In the first year we begin to work through the themes for GCSE:
Theme 1: Identity and culture
Theme 2: Local, national, international and global areas
Theme 3: Current and future study and employment
You can find more information about these topics here.
The skills you develop in learning Italian will be transferable to any other languages you may be studying. Languages are a fantastic complement to a wide range of subject choices and the enviable ability to communicate in one or more foreign languages will always be viewed favourably by universities and future employers. Learners of languages are true polymaths.
As you have studied Spanish, German or French since Year 7, if you wish to continue with just one language to GCSE, for most students, this would be the most suitable language to choose. For those wishing to do more than one language, Spanish, German or French plus Italian will be an excellent combination.
