Ben Eason represented the TKAT ACE Pupil Premium programme at the Sec Ed National PP Conference in Birmingham, where he had the opportunity to engage with a large, highly engaged audience. The event provided a platform for Ben to share the innovative work being done through the ACE programme, focusing on its impact on disadvantaged children across both primary and secondary schools. The impact of TKAT ACE in its simple and clear form and exploring it from its infancy to current day captivated the attendees, sparking a flurry of keen questions from educators eager to learn more about the strategies that have proven successful in supporting these students.
A key aspect of the discussion was the role of ACE Tutors in forming positive relationships with families, which is critical for supporting students' progress. Ben highlighted how ACE Tutors work closely with families to diagnose barriers to learning and set ambitious, incremental targets tailored to each student's unique needs. This approach, combining personalized support and close family engagement, has shown significant success in breaking down barriers to learning. Ben also used the platform to celebrate the incredible work being done in TKAT schools, showcasing how educators across both primary and secondary settings are tirelessly working to support disadvantaged children and celebrating the tangible successes they've achieved. The event served as both a reflection of the positive impact the programme is having and an opportunity to inspire others to adopt similar approaches in their own schools.
On Wednesday, March 26th, I had the opportunity to present at the National Pupil Premium Conference 2025, an online event hosted by Government Events. The conference brought together educators and professionals to discuss strategic approaches to addressing Pupil Premium funding.
During my presentation, I shared insights into TKAT ACE, highlighting its innovative approach to supporting disadvantaged pupils. A key aspect of the program is its emphasis on relationship building. The ACE tutors are trained to develop deep, meaningful connections not only with students but also with their parents and carers. This holistic approach enables tutors to effectively understand and advocate for each student's unique needs, both within the school environment and beyond.
I presented compelling evidence demonstrating TKAT ACE's significant impact on various outcomes. The program has shown remarkable improvements in areas such as student goal orientation, motivation, school engagement, attendance, and overall well-being. These results highlight the program's effectiveness in narrowing the attainment gap for disadvantaged pupils.
The conference attendees responded enthusiastically to my presentation, engaging with thoughtful questions about the program's provisions and impact. It was a rewarding experience to showcase TKAT ACE's successful work across the Trust's schools and contribute to the broader conversation about educational provisions to support all young people.

The Kemnal Academies Trust secures support from Propel funding collaboration to expand TKAT ACE (A Champion for Every Child)
The Kemnal Academies Trust’s ACE (A Champion for Every Child) programme has secured a game-changing grant from Greater London Authority through the Propel initiative, a long-term funding collaboration that will give the capital’s civil society and communities the flexibility, trust and capacity to make long-term, systemic change in London.
TKAT ACE is a unique and highly successful pastoral mentoring programme that is having a significant impact on the life chances of pupils across The Kemnal Academies Trust’s 45 schools. TKAT launched its A Champion for Every Child (ACE) pilot programme at the start of the 2020/21 academic year to support vulnerable children’s development. TKAT provided pupils entitled to Pupil Premium funding at the Trust with one-to-one time with a tutor who had been trained in providing support to potentially vulnerable or disadvantaged children. The aim of the programme was to help these pupils overcome barriers to their progress both in terms of academic outcomes, and their social and emotional development.
An external evaluation of the programme found significant improvements for participating primary and secondary students, including positive outcomes in reading and maths. Other results from the programme included significant improvements in pupils’ self-reported levels of goal-orientation, self-efficacy, and motivation. Pupils were also reportedly more engaged with school life. The full evaluation can be found here.
TKAT has received a grant of £472,000 which will be used to support London schools in introducing and sustaining the TKAT ACE programme. This will mean that within the next 2 years 2,000 pupils will have benefited from having a TKAT ACE Tutor.
Karen Roberts, CEO of The Kemnal Academies Trust, commented: "We are very proud of the difference TKAT ACE has made for the pupils in most need within the Trust and delighted that we have been supported by this Propel grant to take TKAT ACE into schools across London.
“Every child deserves a champion on their side, and we’re grateful to Propel for recognising the impact that this scheme could have on pupils across London.”
Propel is powered by London Funders and are being supported by a growing list of funders, including Bloomberg, City Bridge Trust – the City of London Corporation’s charity funder – The National Lottery Community Fund, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, and main advice funders, such as Trust for London, coordinated by London Legal Support Trust. More information about the Propel collaboration is available here.

About 5,500 primary and secondary pupils entitled to free school meals in The Kemnal Academies Trust (TKAT) will receive pastoral and academic support.
It is believed to be one of the most comprehensive trust-wide mentoring schemes. It is also more welfare-focused than the National Tutoring Programme and more sustainable than initiatives funded through one-off recovery premium funding.
The “A Champion for Every Child”, or ACE, rollout has allowed schools to hire “ambition tutors” full-time for about a third of the roles, with existing staff such as teachers or pastoral support workers making up the rest.
During lockdown we learned:
through keeping in contact with our vulnerable pupils - the power of the one-to-one pastoral conversations
that just providing every PP student with an electronic device did not guarantee pupil engagement
that we could make better use of support staff.
