Our schools are committed to maintaining a safe and healthy learning environment. To help reduce the spread of illness, we ask that you keep your child home if they have experienced any of the symptoms listed below in the past 24 hours.
If any of the following occur, your child should remain at home. If symptoms develop during the school day, they will be sent home:
Fever of 100.4ºF or higher. Your child must be fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication before returning to school.
Persistent or congestive cough: A deep, persistent, or productive (green, yellow, or thick phlegm) cough that prevents the ability to focus in class.
Vomiting: Students must remain home for 24 hours after their last episode of vomiting. Vomiting at school must be witnessed or show obvious signs of suspected illness when assessed by the nurse.
Diarrhea: Frequent watery/loose stools accompanied by stomach cramping. Students need to remain home until symptom-free for 24 hours.
Discharge (other than clear) from the nose, mouth, eyes, ears, or any other body areas.
Rashes A doctor’s note confirming the condition is non-infectious is required before the student can return to school.
Open, draining sores that cannot be covered or kept bandaged.
Previously controlled medical conditions (e.g., asthma, seizures) that have become unmanageable.
Unusual appearance Pallor or flushed appearance, suggesting illness.
Atypical extreme fatigue or lethargy
Hospital, ER Visit, or Urgent Care. Students who have been evaluated/ treated at these facilities must have a doctor’s note stating they are cleared to return to school.
Outbreaks. During outbreaks of communicable diseases (e.g., measles, pertussis, COVID), schools may issue additional guidelines.
Please help keep our schools healthy by following these guidelines. Remember to continue practicing infection control measures such as covering coughs and sneezes, and most importantly, good hand hygiene.
If your child becomes ill at school, you will be contacted to pick them up promptly. If we are unable to reach you, we will call the emergency contacts listed in your child’s school records. Please keep these records up to date.
Because children may not always be able to fully explain how they are feeling, our school nurse, teachers, and administrators will use their professional judgment to determine if a student should remain in school or be sent home.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our school community healthy and safe.
