Strand 1: Creativity and Innovation
Concept 2: Models and Simulations
Use digital models and simulations to examine real-world connections, explore complex systems and issues, and enhance understanding.
Form a logical argument about a correlation between variables or sequence of events (e.g., construct a cause-and-effect chain that explains a sequence of events).
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
Analyze and interpret data to explain correlations and results of Predator-Prey relationships, relationships between niches in biomes, between biomes and ecosystems, and finally between organisms and their environment. Use simulations to examine and determine the effects of changing environmental variables.
Directions: Copy from Name to MFT, then paste on a GOOGLE DOCS document. Save as: CD your name in your drive. Answer the following questions as indicated using the section headings as clues as to where to locate the answers. Don’t play the simulation until the teacher has seen your answers. After getting permission to play the game, play until you have helped an animal survive at least twice showing the teacher EACH time! Then answer the remaining questions.
Charles Darwin and Natural Selection
Natural Selection Questions:
1. Every species exhibits ________________
2. What are some variations you have in your appearance and body structure that make you different from either family members or classmates? (List a least 5 different variations)
3. What are some traits that you have that are in common with your parents and grandparents or a brother or sister? (List a least 5 similar traits)
4. In “plain English” (non-scientific terminology) what does the phrase “survival of the fittest” mean as it relates to a species survival? 1 sentence

6. How old was he when he died?
7. What was the name of the ship Charles Darwin sailed upon?
8. Why would studying animals and plants on an island give Charles Darwin insight into the evolution of those species? In other words why would an island be a better place to study animals and plants as opposed to another type of land form?

Before playing the survival game answer the following questions:
10. If you were designing an animal to live in a desert environment identify at least 5 traits you would want the animal to possess?
11. Likewise, if you were designing an animal to live in a tropical high vegetation area identify traits that animal should possess?
12. Lastly, if you were designing an animal that could survive in a cold snowy environment what five distinguishing traits would be present on that animal?

13. Read the directions then pick some traits that you think would be suitable to survive for the next 1,000,000 years.
14. Identify the three traits that you chose (stripes long neck short legs etc.)

19. Let’s just say… Our population is on the brink of extinction due to severe climate change the world is getting hotter and the sea levels are rising. You are a naturalist who was brought in to express an opinion about which traits would likely survive rising seas and significantly higher temperatures. What specific traits would you suggest? List at least 5 traits and why?
