EW = Educator Workshop
PW = Parent Workshop
NOTE: Although the Parent Workshops are intended for CPS parents, Educators are welcome to attend.
Session Location: Room 215
Session Presenters: Carolyn McElravy - Library Media Specialist, Google Educator
Session Description: In this session, participants will be provided step-by-step lesson plans for introducing lower elementary students to the Chromebook and/or PC. Materials and guidelines will be provided for moving first and second-grade students from the touchscreen of a tablet or iPad to signing into a Google account, using a mouse or touchpad and the keyboard. By the end of our 10 prescribed lessons, 70% of a school's first-grade students were able to log into their Google account and navigate their student portal...your students can too!
Session Location: Room 216
Session Presenter: Julie Barker - High School Science Teacher, Google Educator
Session Description: In this session, CPS parents will be introduced to the course management system called Google Classroom. This tool helps teachers manage many aspects of their coursework as they are able to create classes, distribute assignments, grade and send feedback, and see everything in one place. The presenter will provide a virtual walk-through of Google Classroom and demonstrate its capabilities and features. Although parents do not have their own access to Google Classroom on a daily basis like the students, they are able to be invited to receive weekly updates via email if the teacher chooses to allow the Guardian Summaries feature. Parents will be shown a sample weekly report and how to maintain preferences for those summaries.
Session Location: Room 217
Session Presenter: Michael Papa - Manager of Technology Services, Google Educator
Session Description: In this session, CPS parents will be provided with an overview and brief history of CT Public Act No. 16-189 - An Act Concerning Student Data Privacy, which originally went into effect on October 1, 2016, and has been amended several times since. Participants will learn about the various terminology used within the student data privacy law and the requirements of both vendors and school districts. In addition, CPS will identify and demonstrate the measures it has taken to protect student data and document applications being utilized within the district.
