Learning Chinese gave me increased scholarship opportunities, made me stand out on college applications, and helps me day-to-day in my work. I am the only nurse out of a staff of 200 who can speak Chinese that works in my unit of the hospital, so I get to take care of all of our Chinese speaking patients and create special bonds with them. It means a lot to our Chinese speaking patients to have a nurse who can actually converse with them face-to-face.

I use Chinese when I have patients that predominantly speak Chinese. Since being stationed in Hawaii, I have encountered many patients that speak a plethora of different languages. Surprisingly enough, Chinese is spoken more than you would think with people who move to Hawaii from other countries.
