In my lab at the NIH, about a quarter of the scientists I work with are Chinese and/or speak Chinese, and right from the getgo knowing a few words and phrases helped me establish connections with those people which helped me get involved in different projects. In addition, in applying to medical school, listing Chinese as a language in which I have basic proficiency has sparked questions and led to conversations that have helped me stand out.
