3rd Grade
Rotation 1: Engineering Design process & Marble Runs
In this unit, students will work in teams to design and build a marble run from paper towel rolls and masking tape.
Learning Targets:
I can solve a problem or a challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can design and create a marble run that allows the marble to travel continuously from start to finish.
Rotation 2: digital citizenship
In this unit, students will learn strategies they can use to stay safe, be respectful, and be responsible using digital tools such as computers and phones. Then, they will use Adobe Spark to digitally create a poster about their new knowledge.
Learning Targets
I can solve a problem or challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can name specific ways to be respectful, responsible, and safe online.
Rotation 3: lego derby
Students will use our LEGO track and special weighted LEGO wheels to build and race cars down a 21 foot track.
Learning Targets
I can solve a problem or challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can name 2 or more forces that affect how my LEGO car travels down the track.
I can modify my car to increase or decrease a force to make my car faster or slower.
Rotation 4: scratch
Students will use the Scratch, Jr. app to learn about programming through block codes. They will complete challenges throughout the week that increase in complexity each day.
Learning Targets
I can solve a problem or a challenge using the Engineering Design Process.
I can program a clicker game in Scratch.
Rotation 5: bloxels
Students will use the Bloxels site to design, create, and program an 8-bit video game.
Learning Targets:
I can solve a problem or a challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can design and create an 8-bit Hero video game.
Rotation 6: 3d design and printing
Students will learn about how snowflakes form and investigate radial symmetry. Then, they will use Tinkercad to design a 3D model of a snowflake, which will be printed on a 3D printer for them to keep.
Learning Targets
I can solve a problem or challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can create a symmetrical snowflakes using Tinkercad.
Rotation 7: lego BricQ Motion essentials
Students will use the LEGO BricQ Motion Essentials Kit with the Winning with Science Lessons to demonstrate and learn about various physics concepts through LEGO models of different sports.
Learning Targets
I can solve a problem or challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can demonstrate physics concepts using my LEGO kit.
Rotation 8: dash and dot
Students will use the Dash and Dot robots to learn about loops, event handlers, and complex parameters in programming.
Learning Targets:
I can solve a problem or a challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can use my Dash or Dot to program using programming concepts.
Rotation 9: Stop motion animation
Students will use the Frames software to create an abstract stop motion short story.
Learning Targets:
I can solve a problem or a challenge using the Engineering Design Process
I can show a shape traveling through a space and changing over time.
