Myra Adams recognized a need to support Apprenticeship Instructors with using Canvas in their programs. Most of them work full time and teach at night, leaving them with little time to learn how to prepare a Canvas shell - especially with no help.

In Myra's own words:
"My challenge was to make a simple Canvas guide for our Apprenticeship instructors who are excellent trades people, but don't always want to take the time to build their Canvas shell.
Since people working in the trades are predominantly visual learners, I built a Google site that included several YouTube and Canvas links for the instructors to choose from. I also included links to the Instructure Home page for more detailed instructions for those who like to read instructions.
The Google site also includes a link to a page that has some tips on running an effective class. These are by no means exhaustive because as we know, it takes years to build a teaching practice, but I did give them ideas for flipping the classroom, incorporating hands-on labs, and small group discussions. These are all methods that diversify the learning environment and engage different learning styles.
We will roll out this Google training site officially when we have new instructors for our summer cohort. I would say that unofficially I have been implementing the methods and resources with our two new instructors this past winter term with great success. One of the instructors went from "I don't computer" to writing his own assignments and uploading them into Canvas modules. He learned how to edit an inherited course shell from a previous instructor and make it his own, using the principles I formalized in this Capstone project."
