Oregon HB2919 requires each public university and community college to "prominently display...estimated costs of all required course materials and directly related course fees for no less than 75 percent of total for-credit courses." This legislation was designed to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of the cost of course materials at the time of registration.
Chemeketa was exceeding this requirement even before the legislation went into effect. Currently, about 90% of Chemeketa's courses meet the on-time adoption requirement. You can watch this webinar, hosted by Open Oregon Educational Resources, to learn more about our efforts to make this happen.
Oregon HB2871 requires colleges to designate courses with textbooks and materials that meet the College's low-cost designation ($50 or less) "...in the published course descriptions that are on the Internet or are otherwise provided to students at the time of course registration.” The legislation was designed to both encourage low-cost options and make students aware of courses using low-cost materials at the time of registration.
At Chemeketa, the low-cost course designation is at the section level, and is displayed in the class search with a symbol next to the course CRN.
The Textbook Affordability Committee (TAC) strives to include student representation in their membership, and encourages interested students to participate in committee work. Students are also involved in Chemeketa Press work, and have developed OER content for several courses.
The Bookstore makes it easy for students to find low-cost material courses with a variety of print and digital promotions. Students can use a low-cost materials search tool to find courses with materials priced from $0-$50, by term offered.
