Xeed 3D Printer General Information

Overview

The LeapFrog Xeed Printer was purchased by the FRC team in 4060. It offers interesting capabilities, but has proven to be difficult to use well.

Features:

  • Dual extruders

  • "Heated" print chamber (has a heater, but no actual temperature control)

  • Triple-motor Z axis, with the ability to mechanically level the build platform

  • Built-in OctoPrint web server

Bearcats 4060 Customizations

The printer has been modified from its original configuration in several ways:

  • Built-in computer reformatted to run Ubuntu Linux with a generic OctoPrint web server

    • The original software used a modified version of OctoPrint called LilyPrint. This was based on a very old version of OctoPrint, limiting our ability to use modern features.

  • Firmware has been replaced with generic Marlin firmware

    • Original firmware was based on a pre-1.0 version of Marlin. By using generic firmware we are able to utilize new features and leverage community support.

  • Control board has been modified to provide extra electrical filtering for thermocouple signals. Prior to this change temperature readings were very unstable, leading to poor print performance.

  • The LCD screen has been replaced with an HDMI screen, with touch support more readily compatible with modern Linux distributions.

  • A rear access panel was added to provide physical access to the control board without complete disassembly.

  • Y idler pulleys were replaced to reduce over-tensioning of the axis. Prior to this change the Y axis shaft was bending under the extreme belt tension.

  • Print carriage has been modified to use e3d Kraken/Chimera heatbreaks. This allows us to use "standard" e3d heater blocks and readily available nozzles. We have installed e3d copper v6 heater blocks with e3d nozzles, which provide superior heating performance when compared to the original LeapFrog heaters.

  • Door switch has been removed. It mechanically interfered with enclosure removal, and is not supported in mainline Marlin firmware.
