Suggestions to Improve Your Child's Articulation at Home

Once your child's target sound has been determined by their speech therapist, you can help improve the child's recognition and production of the sound by:

  • Identify words/objects that begin with or contain the target sound in various rooms of the house, on t.v.
  • List friends, family members and/or pets whose names contain the target sound.
  • Read, read, read. Look for words that have your target sound. Practice reading them and saying them correctly.
  • Take advantage of opportunities to improve your child’s articulation when driving in the car, shopping, or taking a family trip, by encouraging your child to look for objects that contain their target sound. Play a game such as “I Spy” where you describe an object containing their target sound, and they name it.
  • Play a game where you say the target sound in a word incorrectly, and the child must correct it.
  • Pick a designated time during the day where you focus on speech. Try not to correct your child constantly throughout the day. We want children to feel positive about their speech, yet aware of their need to improve.
