Carusi 7th Grade Music Exploratory

Guitar(%40)

The main portion of this class will be learning to play the Guitar. In the classroom are 30 guitars of varying style and size. We will spend some time every class period learning about how to play the guitars, reading notation, and proper technique. Students will be graded on how many levels of skill they can pass. We will spend time with chords at first, then moving on to picking melodies by the 3 week of class. All of the six levels of music are on the music exploratory website. Practicing home is encourage, but NOT expected as students will have time to practice during class.

Level 1- 4 Chords

Level 2- E string Etudes (Choice)

Level 3- Ludwig, Andrew, or Prelude (Choice)

Level 4- Happy Birthday

Level 5- G Blues

Level 6- Under the Sea

Guitar Parts Quiz(%20)

We will spend extensive time playing the guitar and learning how it works. Students will take a pretest on the guitar parts on the first day of class and then post test toward the end of the quintile. Parts of the guitar included are tuning pegs, strings, head, body, neck, frets, sound hole, bridge, nut, and pickup.

Journal (%20)

We will also listen to, discuss, analyze, and compare a piece of music using a journal during every class period. This will account for current events as well as several cross curricular ELA goals within Carusi.

Listening Assignment (%20)

Instead of giving homework, the students will have one

assignment to complete on their own. Using very little class time and time on their own, students will become familiar with 18 artists and songs that represent a mix of music in our culture. At the end of the quintile, students will be tested on their ability to identify these pieces of music and artists. Check out link above labeled "Listening Assignments."
