Demonstrate correct kitchen safety, food safety, and sanitation guidelines in our classroom kitchens and at home.
Understand how to prevent food-borne illnesses.
Reading Recipes + Working in the Food Lab:
FY11 Exploring Nutrition and Wellness: 2.02 Understand basic kitchen tools / 2.03 Understand how to follow a recipe
Correctly follow a recipe by analyzing the vocabulary and following a multi-step problem.
Create a variety of recipes in the kitchen (throughout the semester)
Rice Krispies, muffins, salsa, cookies, smoothies, and more!
Kitchen Measuring + Cooking Tools:
FY11 Exploring Nutrition and Wellness: 2.02 Understand basic kitchen tools / 2.03 Understand how to follow a recipe
Correctly measure various staple ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, etc.)
Identify a wide variety of cooking tools and understand their functions.
Correctly double, triple, and halve recipes.
Cooking Methods & Introduction to Nutrition:
FY11 Exploring Nutrition and Wellness: 3.00 Understand nutritious meal planning and preparation + 1.00 Understand the impact of choices on wellness
Understand our cooking method vocabulary terms and demonstrate them in the kitchen. (Examples: bake, saute, boil, simmer, blend, whip, fold, etc.)
Personal Finance + Career Exploration:
EY12 Exploring Financial Literacy: 1.00: Understand how to take charge of personal financial well-being
Standards from EY 12 Exploring Financial Literacy
Understand basic personal finance concepts: saving vs. spending, budgeting, credit vs. debit, banks, interest, goal setting, needs and wants, etc.
Consumer skills: how to read a receipt, smart shopping/comparison shopping, etc.
Everfi Vault / FutureSmart course: A six-module course that will guide you through basic personal finance principles.
Research and identify your potential career interests.
Hand Sewing Basics:
FY12 Exploring Apparel and Interior Design: 1.02 Understand basic construction techniques
Identify the importance of learning how to sew: motor skills, character development, fixing your garments, and creating projects!
Demonstrate the running stitch, back stitch, and blanket stitch.
Create small sewing projects (a keychain, a pillow) to demonstrate your new skills!
