Substance Use Resources

Here is a list of resources for students who may be experiencing difficulties with substance use (tobacco, alcohol, marijuana, prescription medications and other substances).


LOCAL RESOURCES

UNC Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (ASAP) – Offering Inpatient Detoxification and Outpatient Intensive Treatment

Freedom House Recovery Center – Offering Inpatient Detoxification and Outpatient Treatment, including a Crisis Unit (919-967-8844) and Mobile Unit (877-967-8844) for immediate substance use and mental health response needs.

Alcoholic Anonymous in NC – Support group meetings for those wanting to stop drinking.

Al-Anon – Support groups for family members of problem drinkers.

Narcotic Anonymous – Support groups for individuals recovering from substance use addiction.

WakeBrook – Residential treatment program for those looking for a structured environment to help them stop drinking.


HOTLINES (Free, confidential, and available 24/7)

Al-Anon and Ala-teen hotline: 800-356-9996 – Support to teens and adults who are negatively impacted by alcohol addiction. Provides resources for group therapy for ongoing support.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA): 1-800-662-4357 – English/Spanish speaking counselors provide referrals to treatment facilities, support groups, and community-based services.

National Suicide Prevention: 1-800-273-8255 – Help for those in crisis process their emotional distress and prevent suicide.

Drugfree.org: call 855-378-4373, text 55753 or email for help (see website) – Support and education to guide you to the best course of action to quit alcohol, tobacco (vaping, cigarettes) or other substance use.

Drug Abuse Hotline: call 877-734-6839 - Counselors provide information on substance use, treatment facilities, and other drug-related topics

QUITLINENC: call 800- QUIT-NOW - Counselors help via phone and online support to stop vaping, cigarette smoking or other tobacco use


ONLINE RESOURCES

ASPIRE: ASPIRE has a free online program for vaping and tobacco use.


VAPING IS AN EPIDEMIC : Created by Tobacco Free California. It provides information on the vaping epidemic, marketing to teens, effects on teens, and a parent guide on how to talk to teens about vaping and resources for support.


NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON DRUG ABUSE (NIDA) FOR TEENS: A great online resource with information for teens, parents and teachers. Includes facts and information on drugs, alcohol and tobacco products. Engaging activities for teens and resources for treatment and support if a teen is using.


CDC E-CIGARETTE INFORMATION: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has this website dedicated to sharing information about e-cigarettes and their effects on the body. In English and Spanish


VAPING : WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND HOW TO TALK WITH YOUR KIDS: The Partnership for Drug Free Kids created this document to discuss vaping and resources for support.


PARTNERSHIP FOR DRUG FREE KIDS: A go-to organization for families addressing substance use and addiction, from prevention to recovery. Empowers parents and caregivers with support and guidance using the latest science-based information. They research and advance effective prevention and treatment strategies.


THE CAMPAIGN FOR TOBACCO-FREE KIDS: Resources for parents and youth on tobacco use among teens, how to talk with your child, and strategies to combat this issue.


HELPING YOUR TEEN COPE WITH TRAUMATIC STRESS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE: The National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) provides information on substance abuse, symptoms, its relationship to trauma, and ways to support teens.
