Q: Are there official team workouts over the summer?
A: The coaching staff does not host official, in-person summer workouts. However, arriving to the first week of preseason conditioning with a baseline level of fitness is critical for preventing injuries. We have provided a complete, independent Summer Training Guide page with simple running and core workouts athletes can follow on their own.
Q: Can I do track & field and another sport at the same time?
A: It depends on the season and the sport.
Other CHHS Sports: Dual-sport participation during the same high school season requires pre-approval from both head coaches and the Athletic Director. It is highly demanding and requires time management.
Club/Rec Sports: You can participate in outside club sports, but your commitment to the CHHS Track team must come first. High school practices and meets take priority over club schedules.
Q: What equipment or gear do I need to buy?
A: The school provides your competition uniform singlet, which must be returned at the end of the season. Athletes are responsible for providing:
A quality pair of running shoes (go to a dedicated running store to get properly fitted; do not train in basketball shoes or casual sneakers).
Weather-appropriate practice gear (sweats/layers for cold days).
Event Spikes: These are lightweight racing shoes with metal spikes. Do not buy these yet! Wait until the coaching staff helps determine your specific event groups during the first few weeks of practice.
Q: Are there cuts, and does everyone get to compete at meets?
A: Track & Field is a "no-cut" sport if you show up, work hard, and maintain your academic eligibility, you are on the team. However, making the roster does not guarantee entry into every track meet. NCHSAA rules strictly limit how many athletes a school can enter per event (usually 3 or 4). Entries for competitive varsity meets are based entirely on performance, attitude, and practice attendance. We do our best to schedule developmental meets so every athlete gets an opportunity to compete.
