The United States Department of Education has defined giftedness as “children and youth with outstanding talent who perform or show the potential for performing at remarkably high levels of accomplishment when compared with others of their age, experience, or environment.”
For more updated information about the current state of gifted education, please consider referring to the National Association for Gifted Children's 2014-2015 report on the State of the Nation in Gifted Education. This is the most recent report regarding gifted education at the national level.
The National Association for Gifted Children's goal is to support those who enhance the growth and development of gifted and talented children through education, advocacy, community building, and research. They aim to help parents and families, K-12 education professionals including support service personnel, and members of the research and higher education community who work to help gifted and talented children as they strive to achieve their personal best and contribute to their communities.
