Article 9B (the state statute that outlines gifted education in NC) states that local LEA's must create a district AIG policy regarding identification, services, programming, etc. The program standards can be found on the "state level" page of this website.

• The re-visioning of the AIG Plan focuses on ways to deliver a broader continuum of services to more students. Beginning in 2018-2019, a range of enhancements will be implemented at all schools, including developing challenge points in ELA Core Units for grades 3-8, clustering highly gifted students for ELA and Math, and expanding use of Paideia Seminars for elementary and secondary students.
• A new point of emphasis will be to develop better services for highly gifted students within their zoned middle schools, as well as to increase the number of AIG licensed teachers at all schools, but prioritizing middle schools. Last spring a cohort of 18 CHCCS teachers entered an ELON-provided licensure program, and in spring 2019, another 24 teachers will form Cohort II.

Elementary School

• Early Entrance to Kindergarten -The State of North Carolina has a process to decide if students may enter kindergarten earlier than the typical age (5 years old by August 31). In general, students who are admitted early are mature for their age in cognition, as well as in social skills and emotions. • The LEAP (Learning Environment for Advanced Programming) option provides a learning environment and advanced curriculum and instruction designed to meet the needs of highly gifted students in grades four through eight. These students are unlikely to meet their potential through differentiated instruction for gifted learners in the regular classroom and need accelerated study in all four of the content areas, including language arts, math, science, and social studies. Middle School & High School

• The Credit by Demonstrated Master (CDM) acceleration option allows students to test out of a course during the summer. Middle and High School students who wish to pursue CDM will need to show mastery of eligible course content in two phases, an exam and the creation of a product/performance that exhibits deep understanding and application of the subject matter.
