What About Student Chromebooks?
All students in Chatham County Schools currently have access to Chromebooks from Kindergarten through 12th Grade!
A device is assigned by the School Tech through classroom teachers and/or the office staff.
During the school year, students will not be able to receive a Chromebook until AFTER their first day of enrollment. Check with your School Tech to learn more about students' devices.
Google Play is limited to CCS pre-approved apps for students.
Student chromebooks do have the ability to print when necessary. This is a school-based question and should be addressed with your school level tech if assistance is needed.
What if my students need a MacBook?
Each high school and middle school will be provided sufficient carts to support your student population for the items that cannot be immediately transitioned to Chromebooks.
How does testing work on a Chromebook?
SchoolNet, the NC Secure Testing Browser, Canvas, and most AP tests will work on Chromebooks. The College Board is transitioning their audio-required testing to use a Chromebook compatible tool that will be available for the 2021-2022 school year AP Testing season. We have provided sufficient MacBooks to account for AP Tests that may still require something other than a Chromebook.
What About Student Email & Accounts?
Each student is assigned a CCS email username and password. Like teacher accounts, student email is also Gmail!
Student email accounts have different permissions and access than teachers. They are easy to recognize as they are listed as -
username@stumail.chatham.k12.nc.us
Only people with a CCS email account and approved outside email addresses can email students. Submit a help request using incident IQ if you need help with others or platforms emailing students.
If your students are in grades K-5 and need help signing into their Chromebooks or other accounts, we recommend that you use Clever badges with your students. Check with your Curriculum Coach, Librarian, or School Tech for more information.
For district-purchased digital platforms, Technology Services creates accounts for these services using PowerSchool, Clever, or Google Single Sign-On. These accounts are generated automatically AFTER a student is fully enrolled in PowerSchool.
What About PowerSchool?
Chatham County Schools Accountability Department is responsible for HomeBase and PowerSchool. Contact your school's data manager for your login, more information, or help with issues related to PowerSchool.
What Web Browser Should I Use?
Technology Services recommends that you use Google Chrome as your primary web browser. There are a few applications where Safari may work better.
What is a Google Chrome Extension?
One of the conveniences of Google Chrome is that they offer extensions to users. The "catalog" of extensions is available in the Google Chrome store.
Once installed, an extension will appear in the web address bar in the upper right-corner of Google Chrome.
Staff have permissions to install extensions. Students have access to only approved extensions.
Submit a help ticket using incident IQ to request an extension be approved for students.
