Quick and Dirty How-To for New Google Sites
Click HERE to access the files you will need
- Go to https://sites.google.com/new
- Click on the RED circle with a plus in the bottom right corner
- Change the page name to (Your Name) Digital Collection
- Click the top left and name the actual website. Name it the same as the landing page name (Your Name) Digital Collection
- Hover over top banner for options
- Add a school logo to standardize the pages
- Have kids create a personal crest to add to their page.
- Change the Header Type if you want
- Change the image to e-Portfolio Process (from the folder I shared with you)
- Double-click below the banner to get the tool palette. (shown at right)
- URL = videos and online photos
- Images = online images, search, get from Drive
- Upload = if need file saved on laptop or desktop
- From Drive = any file
- Text = text box for you to type in

The icon you choose makes a difference:
This will only select images from your Google Drive.
Upload will select any file from your hard drive or external drive.
From Drive embeds any type of file from your drive with a preview. It also allows viewers to see the file live on the site without having to open it.
- Double click and choose From Drive from the icon palette.
- Locate the shared folder "Digital Content Training Folder."
- Open the folder and choose the same picture as the header: "ePortfolio Process"
- Resize the picture and move it to the right side.
- Notice the grid when you move an item
Add a Reflection Text Box

- Double-click to the left of the picture and choose Text in the center.
- Immediately, change the Normal Text to Heading
- Type "Reflection" and hit Enter
- Type a quick explanation for what the significance of this image is.
Add an Emphasis Bar

- Double-click below that box.
- Choose Text
- Change format to Header
- Hover and select the painter's palette on the left.
- Choose Emphasis 2 with background color.
- Type Math into the text box.
Add a Slide Show

- Double-click below the Emphasis bar.
- Choose "From Drive"
- Locate the shared folder and select the yellow Slides icon named "4th Grade Math"
- Resize it to one side and add a reflection text box on the opposite side.
- Hold down the shift key to resize it preserving scale.

- Double-click below that box.
- Choose Text
- Change format to Header
- Hover and select the painter's palette on the left.
- Choose Emphasis 2 with background color.
- Type Math into the text box.
Add a Google Docs Text File

- Double click below the Slide Show and choose "From Drive"
- Your Drive will open on the right side.
- Locate the folder in Shared With Me at the top
- Locate the folder "Digital Content Training Folder."
- Double-click the file "Text File" to insert it.
- Use the blue circles to resize it to half the width of the page. You can put it on either side.
- On the opposite side, double click and choose Text again.
- Write "Reflection" at the top and select Heading again to format it with the default settings.
- This time, double-click below the word Reflection to create a text box for reflection.
Add a Page

- Click on PAGES in the right menu.
- Click the Plus Page button below the HOME page.
- Call the new page About and hit enter.
- Notice the new About page is automatically added to the top menu.
- Hover over the About page in the right menu
- Click on the three dots for MORE
- Select "Create Sub Page
- Call it Family
- Notice ABOUT now has a drop-down arrow to its right.
- Family is now a sub-item in the menu when you hover over About in the Menu.

Embed Code is a new game changer in Sites. It allows you to embed anything from the Internet right into your site.
Think about all the different places students can create work. Now you can host all of it in one place as a student portfolio in Google Sites.
Consider these:
- FlipGrid
- Twitter Feeds
- Facebook Feeds
- Instagram Feeds
- Padlet

Preview, Share, and Publish Your Site
Preview, Share, and Publish Your Site
- Close the Drive menu on the right if it is open.
- Click on the eye to preview your site in three formats:
- mobile phone
- tablet
- full monitor
- Click the +person button to add collaborators
- Click the PUBLISH button.

- our site URL will start with sites.google.com followed by your domain.
- You must add the final part of the address. Keep in mind this is your address online, so only one person can have that address. Make it unique.
- Choose whether you want to lock it down within your domain or make it life for the world.
- If you choose Anyone on the Web, you will get a secondary feature asking if you want to block search engines from finding your site.
- If you choose yes, only people with the link will be able to find your site. (SAFER)
- If you choose no, your site will be able to be found by anyone.
- Click Publish whenever you add to or edit your site to allow viewers to see the changes.
