So today was our final trail day and I was actually kind of excited about it. Our teacher, Mrs. A told us that we would be going deeper into the woods then we have ever went before. Normally I would be against that idea, but since it was our last trail day I was excited to make it worth something and fully participate. The overall goal of this trail day was to determine the air quality by using bio indicators in the environment. In order to do this we were going to have to examine the lichen on the trees. We learned in class prior to going out on the trail, how to determine air quality based on the characteristics of the lichen. If the lichen was leafy and shrubby than the air quality was pretty decent. If there is barely any lichen on the trees at all then the air quality is not that good and there may be pollution.
In the beginning, when we first started out on the trail everything was going well. I was following behind Mrs. A and taking pictures of the surrounding environment along with indicators of the air quality. Eventually, however, the group that I was with decided to keep walking on thinking we knew our way. Boy were we wrong. We ended up making a right instead of a left and got lost in the woods for a w
hile. We could hear Mrs. A blowing her whistle in the distance but still could not tell which way to go. We eventually found our way out of the woods by going off the trail and just taking a chance. Walking along the trail we ran into giant mud puddles, animal traps, and crack houses. Due to the fact that the ground was so damp and muddy we were able to see clearly defined dear tracks. Also, the father we walked along the trail I noticed that there were more and more trees that had fallen on the group in the middle of the pathway. This made it kind of hard to walk in certain places. I had to really pay attention to where I was stepping.
Strangely enough, when myself and the group that I was with first walked into the trail the sun was out and shinny and it was not raining. There was just this cool wind blowing and a slight humid feel, but not too terrible. In contrast to what we felt starting out on the trail, once we got off the trail and were leaving, the clouds had rolled in, the wind picked up, the sun was gone and it was even starting to drizzle a little. Or maybe that was just the water rolling off of the leaves from the tall trees because of the rough winds. We all thought it was so creepy how the weather changed so drastically from when we first went in to when we got out. It was almost as if while we were lost in the woods something evil was happening. It felt like I was in some sort of horror movie.
Overall, with everything that happened. Getting lost, the change in weather and the many obstacles, I still managed to collect some good evidence and indicate the air quality. Along the way I noticed a few trees that had lichen on it. The lichen was leaf like and thing. According to what we learned in class, this is an indicator of good air quality. So in conclusion I ended up completing the mission of the last trail day successfully!

Valerie,
You did a fantastic job helping me to feel, hear, and see what you did. Although I am not a science teacher, you seem to have a solid understanding of how to identify markers for the presence of air pollution. If you are willing to do some edits, double-check your then/than words. It looks like you reversed them. Then is for time. Than has to do with comparison "bigger than", etc.
Overall, very well done.
Twenty years from now is quite a long time. A lot can happen within a twenty year time span. Two presidents having two terms, A mother can become a grandmother, and a war could begin and end all within the time of twenty years. So when you are talking about what can happen in twenty years in terms of the world's changing climate, it is safe to say that really a lot could be different. From my own life, to what the environment will be like, to new technologies that will have emerged; things will be a lot different from the way they are now.
As far as my life goes I believe that twenty years from now I will be very successful and happy. They say that after you go through your time of wilderness you will experience a period of happiness and joy after its over with. Since I am going through my wilderness currently with all the stress I have surrounding school and other things, I feel that when I am older it will all pay of and be worth it. Referring back to when I said I believe I will be successful and happy, that will be because by then I plan to already have my film and music production agency up and running. I also think I will be genuinely happy because I would have started a family of my own with children and a husband.
In contrast to what my life will be like in twenty years, I believe that the environment will not be in the best shape. Currently the earth is suffering from global warming. This is the gradual increase in the overall temperatures of the earth's atmosphere. This is happening due to the releasing of fossil fuels. Although fossil fuels like coal and oil are important resources for many economies in the world, the process to get them is very harmful to the environment. If temperatures continue to increase at the rate that they are increasing now, in twenty years a large percent of the earth will be under water. Many of glaciers would have melted not only effecting the arctic wildlife, but also raising the sea levels.
However, in addition to a changed environment, in twenty years I would expect for their to be more advancements in technology. The advancements made in technology, I believe will be able to combat a lot of the environmental issues that would have arose such at the high sea levels. In conclusion technology advancement will end up being one of the more positive aspects of the world twenty years from now.
With all of that being said, I can say that twenty years from now will be an interesting time. There will be negative environmental issues that will need to be handled and taken seriously, along with new technology advancements that will help fix those problems. As for my life I believe that I will have grown into a stronger, wiser and more responsible young woman.
In this day and age it is very evident that the world we live in is experiencing significant changes. Some of these changes are beneficial, however most of these changes are extremely dangerous to our environment. Out of all the changes that our occuring in our world environment, the most important one would be the continuous warming of the climate or global warming.
The evidence that shows that this phenomenon is happening is the melting of glaciers ultimately causing sea levels to rise to record breaking heights. Another sign that this is happening is when the native animals and wildlife of arctic climates begin to show signs of starvation, sickness, or disease. If this continues to happen, much of the world will be under water.
In addition to the many essencial environmental factors will be lost or washed away along with many lives lost. The reason why global warming is even happening is because of the fact that there is an increasing amount of air pollution that is pushing the climate to a point of no return. In high industrialized cities like NYC and Japan, there are more chances for their to be air pollution. Large factory building that are making machines release the dangerous chemicals that are being used inside from their chimneys.
Overall, it can be concluded that global warming is a serious thing that needs to be noticed and taken seriously. The first step to taking action is the understand the cause. Once you have a good understanding as to what is causing the problem, then you will be able to fix it and make out world a safer place.

Todays trail day was shorter than usual. We took ratkes gloves and trash bags out to the trail. There was a tree branch that had fallen along the trail so someone used their truck to help pull the tree out. It was a little hard doing this due to the fact that the tree branch is so heavy. It was a little cold outside . The ground was wet.
Today instead of just hiking the trails we decided to do trail maintenance. We all either grabbed a rake or a trash bag along with some gloves. While hiking throughout the trails we searched for any trash that may have been laying around on the ground and also used the rakes to clear and widen the paths. I thought this was a nice thing to do because it made the area look a whole lot nicer after we finished. The weather outside was very humid and wet however, so that made the trails very muddy. Aside from the trail maintenance activity today I am feeling okay. I don't plan on going to the pep rally that is this afternoon due to all the tension that has been going around the school this week. I'm looking forward to this weekend.
Today was a good day. The rest of the class and I went on one of the tails near the school. Going on the trail was like an out of body experience. Like being in a movie. The wet grounds and tall trees around me made it feel so majestic. The temperature was warm with a slight humidity. There was also a slight breeze to go along with it. I could hear the sounds of the different creatures that lived in that environment. I even got a glimpse of a snake and a wild turkey. Overall it was a great experience and I cant wait for the next trail day.
