Mathematics
Much has been learned in the past few decades about classroom instruction that effectively promotes the development of math proficiency in all students. Based on both math research and general research about how students learn, Chappaqua Central School District has established the following five core principles:
Equity ♦ Curriculum ♦ Teaching ♦ Learning ♦ Assessment
District Math Curriculum & Programs
ELEMENTARY (Grades K-4)
Math in Focus: Math in Focus Website
MIDDLE SCHOOL (Grades 5-8)
Math in Focus: Math in Focus Website Grade 5
Big Ideas Math: Modeling Real Life Grades 6 and 7
Algebra 8/Enriched Algebra: Grade 8
HIGH SCHOOL
MATH COURSES: Chappaqua Developed, grounded in the 9-12 Next Generation Math Standards
HGHS Decisions Book: Includes Course Descriptions
Students are:
Actively engaging in the learning process
Using existing mathematical knowledge to make sense of problems and persevere in solving them
Making connections among mathematical concepts by making use of structure and regularity
Reasoning abstractly and making conjectures
Using a variety of representation and tools to solve problems and communicate their process and solution
Receiving and providing feedback on thinking and solutions
striving towards precision and accuracy via self-reflection and feedback
The program offers a consistent approach of concrete to pictorial to abstract pedagogy, repeatedly employed, in order to support the development of high levels of conceptual understanding and use of skills for all students.
Scaffolding is found throughout the program.
Students are given increasingly more intricate problems and draw upon prior knowledge in addition to recently acquired concepts/skills in order to solve these problems.
The program develops concepts and skills in tandem.
The program uses clear and engaging visuals to present concepts and model solutions.
