A-Levels

Advanced level qualifications (known as A levels) are subject-based qualifications that can lead to university, further study, training, or work. You can normally study three or more A levels over two years. They’re usually assessed by a series of examinations.

If you want to go to university

If you're thinking of going to university or pursuing a higher level apprenticeship, most Higher Education providers will require you to have completed 3 A Levels (or equivalent). In some instances  specific A Level subjects may be required.  For example, many medical schools often require specific A Level subjects as part of their entry requirements. They might ask for Chemistry and Biology as mandatory A levels because these subjects provide a solid foundation for understanding medical principles.

If you're not sure what you want to do

If you’re not sure what career or job you want to do, studying a selection of A levels can be a good way of keeping your options open.

For example: Saira has decided to study a combination of A levels that includes Mathematics, English Literature, and Computer Science. This diverse selection keeps her options open. She has not prescribed to a specific career path early on. Instead, she is gaining  a well-rounded set of skills that could apply to a variety of future opportunities. The downside of this is she will likely need to embark on further study if she wishes to pursue a skilled job or graduate employment opportunities.

If you don't feel you do well in exams

For those who may not perform well in exams, BTECs (or other vocational courses) could be a suitable alternative. These courses are primarily coursework-based and have fewer exams, potentially aligning better with your skillset. They are widely recognised by lots of universities too, so not doing A- Levels does not necessarily mean you cannot go to university- and you can even do a combination of both BTEC and A-Level.
