Track
The Track and Field team has started their first week of practice with high spirits! The first meet the track team will compete in is on Saturday, March 18 at Notre Dame. The regular season will go to Tuesday, April 25. After the regular season is over, the Conference meet will follow that Saturday. The winners of this meet will advance to Districts, then Sectionals, and lastly the State competition. The Team's coaches are Head Coach Travis Calkins, and Assistant Coaches Jack Altermatt, The Beloved Mr. B, and Mary Owens. The Throwing Coaches are Coach Andy Cannon and Ben Rushing. Wish the girls and boys a good season!
Baseball
Spring is right around the corner, which means baseball season is officially starting! The first official game for the season will take place on Monday, March 20th at 4:30 pm. They will take on Delta at Chaffee. We have a pretty decent size team this year, 2 of them being seniors. Our 2023 seniors are Seger Ruiz and Zaven Leible. We have asked the two seniors about how they think the season will go and also about it being their senior year. Zaven Leible's response was, “I think we will have a good season. Baseball is always a good season no matter the wins or losses. Chaffee is a very strong competing baseball team and I know our guys will give it their all until the very last time me and Seger step off the field. Nobody can say exactly how the season will go just because nobody can predict the future, but I feel like this team has good things coming its way.” Our other senior Seger Ruiz has responded with, “I think we have lots of winnable games this season with lots of good competition. If we play solid ball, we can make a playoff run." We sure hope so!
On Saturday, March 4th, the baseball and softball team co-hosted the annual pancake breakfast. Instead of it just being the baseball team, they switched it up and let softball be a part of it as well! Every player from both teams had tickets to sell which goes towards hoodies and other costly things for the upcoming season. This breakfast was all you can eat pancakes, sausage, and eggs. People around town could purchase a ticket from any player for just $10! The breakfast was from 7:00 am to 9:30 am. They had a very good turnout and tons of support from the community.
Cheer Try-Outs
On the week of February 27th - 4th, Chaffee cheer tryouts were held. I know it seems weird to hear that tryouts lasted a whole week, but just bear with me. In the past couple of years, we would hold 3 “clinics” prior to actual tryouts where we get the chance to learn the cheer, chant, and dance necessary to try out. This year, the coaches decided to switch up a little bit by extending clinics to all during the week so that the younger girls could have more advantage to learn. It was a light, fun environment where there was no drama or anything negative, only a big group of girls all working towards the same goal. On Saturday, February 4th there were actual tryouts. It took hours. I’m not kidding. Practically a full school day. They were packed in the library like sardines while groups of three went into the gym at a time. That’s also something they do differently, they don’t make the girls go in one at a time to try out. The coaches know that that would only make the girls more nervous than they needed to be. In the end, though, cheer tryouts were pretty successful. We ended up with 20 girls and 1 boy! How exciting; there hasn’t been a boy cheerleader in probably, like, a decade. This year is going to be good. We hope to see you all at the games and especially competition!
E-Sports
The Esports teams have started the season off with a strong start. Four of the five teams started off with a strong 2-1 record working hard to keep winning and keeping spirits high. The atmosphere in the room is always upbeat and people are always joking around and enjoying their time. Coaches Mitchel Dirnberger and Austin Westrich are thrilled with how the teams have been performing and are excited to see what the future can bring!
