2 Units
Course Description:
In Visual Arts, students explore how art is a powerful form of thinking, reflection and expression. In this course you will build skills in painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, digital media and more. Students will experiment with materials, challenge assumptions and reflect critically on their own practice.
You'll also learn how to unpack historical and contemporary artworks and how artists make thoughtful decisions, respond to evolving ideas and communicate concepts that go beyond words. Students examine how artworks can have multiple meanings, how cultural values are reflected in art and how small aesthetic changes can impact an audience’s understanding.
Visual Arts is all about expressing yourself while developing practical skills and critical thinking. You'll work on a major Body of Work across Year 12 that shows off your creative ideas and style. It’s perfect for students who want to push their creativity, work independently and explore big ideas through art.
The Visual Arts course encourages open-ended making, deep reflection and an appreciation for diverse perspectives, leading to a resolved body of work supported by written and visual diary process work.
Whether you're heading towards a career in the creative industries or just want a subject that helps you think differently, Visual Arts helps you build confidence, critical thinking, focus and originality as key skills for life after school.
In Year 11 Visual Arts, students explore how artists use traditional and contemporary techniques to communicate important concepts. You’ll look at how art connects to local and global issues, personal stories and different points of view.
Students will study three main units throughout the year, focusing on building your skill base whilst giving you room to explore your own interests and ideas.
You’ll also start developing your own Collection of Work using a mix of materials and techniques. These might include:
Drawing (pencil, pastel, charcoal, mixed media)
Painting (acrylic, oil, watercolour)
Pottery and ceramics
Digital photography
Printmaking (lino, etching)
Sculpture or installation art
This course gives you the freedom to be creative while building strong skills in artmaking and critical thinking.
Students create a Body of Work exploring a concept developed based on their own interests and ideas, in collaboration with their teacher. We encourage students to choose a concept which interests them and utilise materials they have shown skills in, developing a knowledge of mediums and related techniques.
In Art Criticism and Art History, students study five case studies which explore the work of both Australian and international artists. Short and extended response answers are developed to build student's skills in interpreting and understanding art.
