The Process
Thematic Exploratory
Drawing students kicked off the Patchwork Pathways project with several rounds of concept development for crosswalks and utility box wraps.
Students reviewed community research, discussed and critiqued their creative concepts, and identified their preferred leading themes for public art and design development.
Concept Design
Design students used the themes from exploratory and a utility box activity worksheet to develop utility box concepts of their own. Specific consideration was given to pedestrian and driver's perspectives.
Design Development
Design students learned how to use Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator to bring their concepts to life with a range of original and other student's artwork.
3D Mockups
Digital designs were applied to the utility box template, printed out on card stock, and then cut and glued together to create 3D mockups for presentation and discussion.
Students critiqued one-another's work and discussed ways they might improve their designs.
Public Art Board Presentation
Public Art & Design students shared the 3D mockups and a presentation of their mural and utility box concepts with the Cuyahoga Falls Public Art Board for approval to proceed with the project.
The final site plan was approved by the City's Public Art Board! Our teams were now ready to move forward with final design and production for 11 utility box wraps and 8 sidewalk murals.
Design Finalization
Our student teams then went to work to optimize and finalize all of their designs for production using precisely measured design templates for each of their approved utility boxes.
More Boxes
With budget savings from other phases of the project, we were able to add four additional utility boxes to our project scope. Art x Love is finalizing the production files for SpeedPro to install this summer!
Implementation
Stay tuned as this student vision for utility box wraps along Portage Trail comes to life!
