COURSE OFFERINGS AND DESCRIPTIONS
Spanish 1 - Spanish I introduces the Spanish language through an emphasis on listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing proficiency, speaking proficiency, vocabulary and grammar. Students will explore the language through various formats including individual work, cooperative small groups and whole-class contribution. Students will also be introduced to the Spanish/Hispanic culture through various discussions, cultural comparisons and current events in order to acquire an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish-Speaking world. Assessments, both formative and summative, will emphasize listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing proficiency, speaking proficiency and language usage. Teacher will use, and students will be encouraged to use, Spanish in the classroom.
Spanish 2 - Spanish II further develops the language skills learned in Spanish I through an emphasis on listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking. Students will explore the language through various formats including individual work, cooperative small groups and whole-class contribution. The students’ understanding of the Spanish/Hispanic culture will be enhanced in order to further acquire an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Themes covered during semester one and two include review of Spanish 1, travel, weather, and vacations, daily routines, clothing and shopping, food and restaurants, and celebrations. Honors Spanish 3 / HCC Intermediate Spanish I - Honors Spanish III is designed for highly motivated students who have demonstrated an advanced level of interest, learning and achievement in Spanish. In Honors Spanish III, students will continue to enhance and expand on the language skills they developed in Spanish I and II. Students in Honors Spanish III will learn the Spanish III material in more depth and at a faster pace and extend it to further vocabulary and grammar objectives. The course also provides additional reading material and communicative opportunities entirely in the target language. Students’ understanding of the Spanish/Hispanic culture will be enhanced in order to further acquire an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Assessments, both formative and summative, will emphasize listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking. The teacher will use, and students will be required to use, Spanish in the classroom.
Spanish 4 - In Spanish IV, students will build on the knowledge from previous courses as they enhance their skills in listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking. Students will explore the language through various formats including individual work, cooperative small groups and whole-class contribution. The students’ understanding of the Spanish/Hispanic culture will be enhanced in order to further acquire an appreciation for the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Assessments, both formative and summative, will emphasize listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking.
Honors Spanish 4 / HCC Intermediate Spanish II - Spanish Honors IV is an advanced course that will strengthen and deepen students' skills in the four main areas of production: listening, speaking, reading and writing. There will be strong emphasis in the oral production because the class will be conducted in Spanish. Students will engage in conversations and discussions on topics such as current events, culture, music, social issues as well as short literary works. Grammar will be taught in context. The course will be fast paced and rigorous while addressing the needs of students who will take the concurrent Hawkeye class second semester. Students should expect frequent oral and written assessments.
AP course offerings-
AP French- This year-long course is designed to expose students to a course that is typically found in a college-level French course. The course will focus around the six AP French themes which are: Global Challenges, Science and Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal and Public Identities, Families and Communities, and Beauty and Aesthetics. The course will culminate with the AP exam which encompasses tasks such as: interpretive communication through print and audio texts through multiple-choice sections, written communication such as email reply and argumentative essay, and speaking tasks such as a simulated conversation and a cultural comparison monologue.
Successful completion of a level 3 French course at a B level or higher is highly recommended for student success. Department Recommendation/Approval.

Themes covered during semester one and two include review of German 1, the environment, chores and duties, weather, vacations, daily routines, clothing and shopping, making comparisons, asking for and giving advice, food and nutrition and artistic performances. Students will be able to describe actions that happen, are happening, have already happened and could happen.
German 3 - German III will further develop the language skills learned in German I and II through an emphasis on listening and reading comprehension, writing, speaking and language usage skills. Students will further explore the language in more depth through various formats including individual work, cooperative small groups and whole-class contributions. The students’ understanding of the German culture will be enhanced in order to further acquire an appreciation for the diversity of our world. German culture will be explored in more depth through the usage of audiovisual materials including movies from German speaking countries and authentic German-language articles and other types of educational materials from the German-speaking world. Assessments, both formative and summative, will emphasize listening comprehension, reading comprehension, writing and speaking. Teacher will incorporate, and students will be encouraged to incorporate, more regular use of German in the classroom.
German 4 - German IV will further develop the language skills learned in German I, II and III through an emphasis on listening and reading comprehension, writing, speaking and language usage skills.
