COURSE OFFERINGS AND DESCRIPTIONS
This class is an exploration of clay, functional and sculptural. The emphasis is on functional projects using a variety of making methods: potters' wheel, extruder, and hand built. Glazing, staining, low-fire, and stoneware high firings will finish the projects. This is an enjoyable hands-on class, and, after graduating, many students like to stay involved with further studies in college, as a home hobby, or in local community classes. This class stresses self-motivation and self-reliance for individual project interest and class time involvement in a lab situation.
Students should know that a grade of "B" or better is required in order to take Hawkeye Community College Ceramics
Creative Digital Photography I is a course that gives students experience in the areas of digital imaging and photo manipulation using a computer. The class is taught as if everyone is a beginner, regardless of past experiences. Students will be
using basic digital cameras and photo editing software.
The course begins with a history of Photography
and how to incorporate the Elements & Principles
of Art in producing quality images with a digital camera, then progresses to the use of computer software in editing and manipulating photos.
*Creative Digital Photography II continues with more complex creative photography projects using both the camera and digital imaging software.
*A pre-requisite of a "B" or higher in Creative Digital Photography I is required to take Creative Digital Photography II or Graphic Design.
Design I gives students a basic understanding of design principles and the process for solving design problems. The course is built around a series of 2-D and 3-D projects designed so that students will be able to experience how design principles work and how to apply them. The course progresses through a series of design problems that range from relatively easy to more challenging and complex, using a variety of media.
*Design II continues with more complex creative design projects in both the areas of aesthetic and functional design.
This course helps students learn to think creatively, find alternative solutions to problems through experimentation, and evaluate design effectively.
*A pre-requisite of a "B" or higher in Design I Photography I is required to take Design II.
Drawing I gives students an introduction to drawing with a variety of traditional media. The course teaches students how to observe the world around them, as well as the ability to be able to draw an accurate representation of their observations. Students will all begin as if they have no prior knowledge of drawing techniques.
*Drawing II continues the student drawing experience by infusing much more of their own creativity into the process as they begin to explore with a wide variety of new drawing media - chalk/oil pastels, pen & ink, watercolor pencils, mixed media, etc.
*A pre-requisite of a "B" or higher in Drawing I is required to take Drawing II.
*Graphic Design is a course that gives students computer experience in the areas of computer illustration and graphic design. The class is taught
as if everyone is a beginner, regardless of past experiences. Students will be using the top design software on state of the art computers.
This course covers basic and advanced elements
of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign. The
course begins with simple design problems and progresses to more complex design work. A
minimal amount of internet research is done in
this course.
*A pre-requisite of a "B" or higher in Creative Digital Photography I is required to take Graphic Design.
Jewelry/Crafts I gives students a hands-on introduction to the world of jewelry and craft making. Through the use of a wide variety of materials and tools students will create several pieces of jewelry and explore other areas of crafts-making such as bookmaking, basket weaving, stained glass and recycled art. Weekly sketchbook assignments to be completed outside of class are part of this course.
*Jewelry/Crafts II continues with creative small metals projects and an introduction to Stained Glass work.
*A pre-requisite of a "B" or higher in Jewelry I is required to take Jewelry II.
Painting I will offer students the opportunity to explore a wide range of painting styles and techniques. Basic techniques of drawing, composition, and color usage will be covered as well as effective brush and palette knife techniques. The class is student centered and will allow students to make a lot of choices. The class is generally flexible, success oriented, and most painting experiences can be driven by student interest.
Students should know that a grade of "B" or better is required in order to take Painting II.
This class is an exploration of clay, plaster, metal, and found objects to create functional and sculptural works of Art. The emphasis is on sculptural projects using a variety of making methods including extruded, coiled, and hand built clay.
This class stresses self-motivation and self-reliance for individual project interest and class time involvement in a lab situation.
Students should know that a grade of "B" or better is required in order to take Sculpture II.
Open to all students, the Art Club is a chance to get together with other students who love making art to collaborate on projects that benefit the school community.

Ms. Habhab went to Iowa Central Community College and University of Northern Iowa to obtain her degree in Art Education. Her emphasis in college was in drawing, which she feels can be a basis for all areas of art and design. She is in 7th year of teaching and 2nd year teaching at Cedar Falls High School.
When not at school or making art, Ms. Habhab enjoys spending time taking care of her many houseplants, hanging out with her two kitties, or she enjoys running and going to the gym.

Mrs. Olson is in her 15th year teaching at Cedar Falls High School. Primarily teaching Ceramics/Pottery, Painting, Sculpture, and Drawing. She has a Masters in Education and 30 graduate credits in Ceramics which allowed her to be able to teach Hawkeye Concurrent Ceramics at the high school until Spring of 2023.
When not teaching and making art, Mrs. Olson keeps busy with her family, doing house projects, running, and enjoying National Parks!
