The Ruskin College Campus is set in gorgeous Old Headington, and has a real community feel. You will love our leafy and quiet location, with lots of outdoor space, yet we are only a short distance from the bustling city of Oxford.
Old Headington, the area where the college is located, is a "Conservation area" where the original architecture has remained unchanged over the years. Originally, it was a medieval village on the edge of the city but today, it is home to Ruskin College.
The College is a Higher Education College today but it was founded in 1899 by two Americans who studied at Oxford University and decided that the same level of education should be available to everyone. The College is named after John Ruskin, a radical progressive and thinker who also gave his name to the hospital nearby which serves the people of Oxford.

Ruskin is well served by local buses. There are many choices of buses to get to the city centre, all leaving from the Headington Shops bus stop; from here, almost all the buses go to the city centre. Your bus pass will allow you to get on any bus going in the direction of the city centre. To see live bus times, download the UK Bus Checker app, from either the Google Play store or the Apple store - it's incredibly useful and will help you understand bus times.
From Parade Green Residence, public buses are very regular (see the timetable for bus number 10 and bus number 100) and leave from the bus stop immediately outside the Parade Green Complex at the bus stop called Paul Kent Hall and take you to near the Ruskin Campus, to the bus stop called Manor Surgery. From there it is a short walk to Ruskin. See the walking map from the Headington bus stop to the college. From the Headington bus stop, there is a short walk to the campus.
Students and Group Leaders should wear their lanyard at all times on the campus. If you don't, you will be asked to return home to collect it!!
If you are worried about somebody you see on the campus, tell a member of staff.
1. If you see a fire
Find the red box: Go to the nearest "fire alarm call point" (a small red box on the wall) and press the button or break the glass. This will start the alarm.
2. If you hear the alarm
Leave quickly: Get out of the building immediately using the nearest exit.
Don't wait: Do not stop to pick up your bags, books, or phone.
Don't use the lift: Always use the stairs.
Close doors: As you leave, close the doors behind you. This helps stop the fire from spreading.
Go to the Assembly Point: Walk to the meeting area outside. Look for signs that show where to stand. Stay there until a staff member says it is safe to go back inside.
3. Important Rules
Keep paths clear: Never leave bags or furniture in hallways or near exits.
Fire doors: Never use something to hold a fire door open. They must stay closed.
Spray cans: Do not bring aerosol spray paint into the main college buildings.
Follow the rules: The college takes fire safety very seriously. Breaking these rules can lead to trouble with the school.
4. Where to go
The Main Car Park: This is the most common meeting place for most buildings on the Dunstan Road site.
The Front Lawn / Entrance Areas: Depending on where you are, you may be asked to gather in the open spaces away from the main buildings.
Important:
Because the college has different buildings, you must check the Fire Action Notice (a blue and white poster) on the wall in your specific room or hallway. It will tell you exactly which assembly point to use for that building.
When you arrive at the assembly point:
Find your group: Look for your teacher or a staff member.
Stay there: Do not leave until someone takes a "headcount" (checks your name on a list).
Wait for the "All Clear": Do not go back into the building until a staff member says it is 100% safe.
