Oxford University is the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with evidence of teaching going back to 1096. It grew out of a need for more learning opportunities for students in England after being banned from the University of Paris. Over the centuries, Oxford evolved from a simple collection of teachers and students to the world-renowned institution it is today, known for its unique system of colleges and its impact on various fields of study.
The University is made up of 38 colleges, six for graduate students only. Each college has its own history, income, regulations, and organization. The university is a federation of the colleges. There are also six smaller private halls for theology students.
The college is the centre of student life. Each college is built around two or three quadrangles, or large lawns, with a chapel, hall, library, and walled gardens. Most students live in their respective colleges or college-owned accommodations. The junior and middle common rooms, found in every college, function as a meeting place for student activities and social events. The academic year begins in October and is divided into three terms of eight weeks each.
Magdalen College (pronounced Maud-lin) is one of the most famous colleges at the University of Oxford. It was founded in 1458 by a bishop named William of Waynflete. The college has beautiful old buildings, large gardens, and even a deer park where real deer live. Many important people have studied here, including the author C.S. Lewis who wrote The Chronicles of Narnia. Magdalen College is known for its traditions, like singing from the top of a tower every May Day morning. It is a peaceful and historic place that shows what life at Oxford University is like.
